Sol Republic PUNK Wireless Speaker in 3 colors

Thanksgiving is two weeks away and soon the Christmas season will begin. Actually, many retailers have already been running Christmas specials. Speaking of Christmas, I have a great holiday gift idea — the PUNK wireless speaker. Sol Republic sent me a unit for review on my dad blog and I can tell you it is awesome. I think music lovers will love the PUNK portable speaker. It uses Bluetooth technology to stream music from your mobile device to the speaker. It sounds great. Text to 911 Service Coming Soon

The four largest wireless telephone companies (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile) recently agreed to make texting to 911 available in areas where the local 911 center is prepared to receive the texts. Currently text to 911 is only available in limited areas of the United States. The FCC hopes to make this service uniformly available via all text providers by the end of this year.

Qi and the Art of Inductive Charging – Win a Gift Card

Here’s a cool new product: the Energizer Inductive Charger. Yeah, I know. The product is essentially a battery charger for smartphones, MP3 players, and cameras. But the cool thing about the Energizer Inductive Chargers is that it enables dads and moms to charge any device (5W or less) on a single charging station — regardless of manufacturer. With the universal charger, parents can charge their devices without USB cables or power adapter cords. Now that’s cool. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve misplaced my cell phone and camera chargers on more than one occasion. Now that’s a lot of fun — hunting down the right charger when you have billions of chargers scattered through out the house.

Deal of the Day: Get Two Free Smartphones of Your Choice at T-Mobile

T-Mobile is running a special Father’s Day promotion this Saturday (June 19, 2010). Dads and moms who sign-up for a family plan can get two free smartphones of their choice. Yeah, I know, wireless providers offer free cell phones all the time. But those free mobiles phones are usually the less expensive, older models. In the T-Mobile Father’s Day promotion, dads and moms can get ANY PHONE in the T-Mobile store for FREE — like the new myTouch 3G Slide ($430 without contract or $180 with contract), the new HTC HD2 ($450 without contract or $200 with contract), and the new Garminfone ($450 without contract or $200 with contract). Too bad T-Mobile is not allowed to sell iPhones (yet?).

Jawbone ICON Bluetooth Headset Father’s Day Giveaway

Aliph sent me two Jawbone ICON Bluetooth headsets. One to play with and one to give away on my dad blog. A Jawbone ICON Bluetooth headset would be a cool gift for Father’s Day. It’s a nice way to give dad an extra hand (get it?) The wireless headset would also be a useful present. Jawbone (Facebook | Twitter) helps busy dads multi-task by letting them talk hands-free when they are doing things like driving the kids to practice, talking to someone at the office, or performing open-heart surgery. The intelligent Jawbone ICON also lets dad listen to music, podcasts, audio books, and turn-by-turn GPS driving directions, all while keeping both hands on the wheel (note: it’s illegal to use a cell phone while driving without a hands-free device in Oregon and other states).

The MusicLite LED Light and Wireless Speaker System

Checkout the MusicLite wireless LED light speaker combination in the photo below. The MusicLite features a 10-watt LED cluster (65-watt equivalent) and a 25-watt wireless high fidelity speaker. The device screws into a standard light socket. Nice! I’ve wired our TV room for surround sound and I can tell you it’s not a lot of fun. Snaking speaker wires through an insulated wall can be frustrating and crawling underneath the house is zombie creepy (I think our house was built on top of a graveyard). The MusicLite LED light and wireless speaker system would make a great gift for Father’s Day. Unfortunately, the MusicLite will not be available until this fall.

Connectify Wi-Fi Hotspot Software

My wireless router died recently so I have been playing with an application call Connectify for the last couple of days. The software is easy to use and very useful so I thought I would tell my fellow geek dads and moms about the program.

What is Connectify?
Connectify is an easy to use application that can turn a laptop (or desktop computer with wireless capability) into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Thanks to Connectify, geek dads and moms can wireless connect to the Internet without a wireless router. Cool! It’s also free. Double cool! The software isn’t limited to computers. Dads and moms can also connect Wi-Fi enabled devices like a cell phone or a Wii console. In my test, our Wii console detected the Connectify Wi-Fi hotspot, but couldn’t connect to it for some reason (I’ll get it working eventually).
