Looking for a holiday gift idea? How about a Canary all-in-one home security system. The company sent me a unit for review on my dad blog (I’m also giving away a Canary to a lucky reader). I love the Canary home security system. It’s easy to use and is better than my other video system. I think the Canary is a cool gift for the geek dad or mom in your life. Canary offers the ultimate security solution with its built-in microphone, HD camera, motion detection sensors, siren and authority alert options, night vision, and air safety technology. The Canary comes in three colors: black, white or silver. It has a list price of $199, but it will be on sale for $179 in North America (US and Canada) from December 13th to December 26th.
Like many parents, I have a ton of video footage of my kids. And when I show them to my friends and co-workers, they politely watch them. But they don’t get excited unless they see the footage I personally edited (see videos on this page). I’m lucky I have the skill to edit my own video. But many parents don’t. That’s when the upcoming VidMob app comes in handy. The app connects video content creators with video editors in a real-time, bid-based marketplace. The app has not been released yet, but it looks easy to use in the demo I saw last week at the TNT Portland event at the Westin Hotel. Just pick your favorite clips on your phone and then select a video editor with the app.
There are only a few days left before Christmas. If you’re still looking for a gift idea, think about one of the cool Nest gadgets. They are nerdy gifts for the geek in your life.
Our kids don’t return to school for two more months, but I’ve noticed retailers are already promoting back to school supplies. I’ve actually started compiling a list of supplies for the kids. I need to hit the stores soon before the school year sneaks up on me. One store I plan on shopping this year is Staples [Facebook | Twitter]. In addition to school supplies, Staples also has computers, printers and software. In fact, they sent me a copy of Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements for review on my dad blog. In my opinion, the software will come in handy for parents and older kids when school starts again in the Fall.
Monster.com released a new video today. It’s called Wake Up Call and it is very funny. The hilarious and light-hearted video features actor Brian Baumgartner in an office setting as he comforts the employees after they have just been pranked with their wake up call. To help kick off the new Monster.com video, I’m giving away a $25 Visa Gift Card and a Monster Mug (as seen in the video below).
The kids and I can’t wait until ParaNorman [Facebook | Twitter] opens in theaters on August 17th. When it comes to ParaNorman, I’m a little bias for a couple of reasons. First, the 3D stop-motion animation was made in the Portland area. Unlike LA, a lot of films are not made in our city. The second reason I’m high on ParaNorman is because my daughter and I went on a tour at LAIKA Studios a few months ago, and we got a behind-the-scenes look at ParaNorman. BTW, LAIKA is also the animation studio that created Coraline.
I received an exclusive video of the new Toiletnator character for the Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion XL video game. The new brawler video game features 26 playable Cartoon Network characters (including eight new characters — like the Toiletnator). In the video game, players can duke it out with friends for cartoon supremacy. The Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion XL video game is available for the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox360 and the Nintendo Wii game consoles. It will hit stores on Tuesday, November 15th. Thanks to Cartoon Network, I’m giving away a copy of their new game.
I’m giving away the Diamond Multimedia HP200AV Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit on my geek dad blog. It’s a kit for easily expanding your Internet connection by using the electrical wiring inside your walls. The list price is $80. Head over to my geek dad blog to enter to win a Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit. The deadline to enter is November 2, 2011.
Today’s giveaway is brought to you by Fotolia (Facebook | Twitter) — I’m giving away a two week subscription to two readers of my dad blog. Fotolia is one of the top stock photo houses in the world and offers royalty free images and HD videos. You can legally use their photos, illustrations, and videos for your blog/website, advertising media, professional documents, press releases, and other promotional materials. Fotolia has over 12,278,167 photos (JPEG), vector illustrations (AI, EPS, SVG) and HD videos (.mov, .avi, .wmv .flv). To find the right photo for your needs, you can search by keyword, or browse by category, gallery, tag, etc.
Here are three files I downloaded from Fotolia. The files were very large so I saved them in a lower resolution for this blog post.
