Looking for a holiday gift idea? How about a Canary all-in-one home security system. The company sent me a unit for review on my dad blog (I’m also giving away a Canary to a lucky reader). I love the Canary home security system. It’s easy to use and is better than my other video system. I think the Canary is a cool gift for the geek dad or mom in your life. Canary offers the ultimate security solution with its built-in microphone, HD camera, motion detection sensors, siren and authority alert options, night vision, and air safety technology. The Canary comes in three colors: black, white or silver. It has a list price of $199, but it will be on sale for $179 in North America (US and Canada) from December 13th to December 26th.
Are you tired of seeing your kids sitting around playing video games? If you are, then you should check out Treasure Dash (Monkey Mojo Games). The free iOS app combines motion controls with virtual reality to get children on their feet and moving as they explore a colorful and immersive 3D world in the spirit of classic Nintendo adventures (like Mario and Zelda). It’s kinda of like a Wii or Kinect game for your mobile device. Treasure Dash is available now for the iPhone, iPad and other iOS devices. Continue reading to find out how a reader of my dad blog can win a Plush toy featuring the tiger from Treasure Dash.
At the recent TNT Portland event, I talked with a couple of people about the connected car. New cars today come with cool tech like rear view camera system or Bluetooth technology. But if you have an older car like most people (including me), you don’t need to purchase a new car to get the latest in-vehicle technology. Owners of older cars can actually have the latest connected-car technologies installed in their current vehicles. According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), it typically costs less money than a comparable option package on a new vehicle from the same companies auto manufacturers use. Continue reading to learn seven ways to connect your car with the latest technology.
I purchased a couple of these Dynex mobile batteries last month. It’s essentially a mobile charger for your devices when you’re on the road. All you have to do is charge the battery pack when you’re at home. Then you can use the battery pack to charge your mobile phone or device on the road when you don’t have an outlet nearby. I’ve tested them and they work fairly well. The mobile battery includes a USB cable to charge the pack. To charge your mobile device, you just reverse the connection. However, I had to use my Samsung cable when I wanted to charge my Samsung phone with the Dynex battery pack. Note: you can also use the battery pack to charge your iPod and iPhone. Best Buy has the Dynex Lithium-Ion Mobile Battery Pack on clearance for $10 and they are available in multiple colors.
U.S. Cellular is running a special promotion: buy one smartphone, get five free. Wow! With six cell phones, you can have a mobile device for you, your spouse, and each of your kids. And if you have more than four kids, I wish you the best of luck in staying sane. To help spread the word on their promo, U.S. Cellular (Facebook) is also giving away a prize pack on my reviews and giveaways blog. Here is the prize pack:
- $25 US Cellular gift card (can be redeemed for devices, accessories or U.S. Cellular bills)
- Cinch up backpack
- 2 stadium cups
- 3 jotter memo notebooks
- Baseball cap
- LED flashlight
Walmart launched their new Family Mobile cell service yesterday. With Walmart Family Mobile, dads and moms can get unlimited talk and text for $45 a month (additional mobile lines are only $25 per month). The Walmart branded cell phone plans are actually powered by T-Mobile, but the plans won’t be available directly from T-Mobile. The new Walmart plan is a postpaid/prepaid hybrid. You pay at the end of the month for talk and text, but you have to prepaid for web data. According to Walmart, their new cell plans do not require contracts and a family of three can save up to $1,200 per year compared to other plans. Sounds too good to be true? Yes and no. Read on to find out why.
HoMedics sent me a SoundSpa Lullaby for review. I love it. My wife loves it. Even the little one likes it. The SoundSpa Lullaby is a device for soothing babies, toddlers, and dads (I’m serious, the SoundSpa Lullaby can help parents fall asleep too). It’s a combination mobile and sound machine. But instead of an actual mobile, the SoundSpa Lullaby projects the rotating images on a ceiling or wall. My wife and I bought a motorized mobile before. We hated it. The motor was too loud and annoyed the heck out of us. The baby didn’t like it either and we eventually returned it. The SoundSpa Lullaby, on the other hand, is whisper quiet when the audio is off (separate on/off switches for audio and projector).
T-Mobile is running a special Father’s Day promotion this Saturday (June 19, 2010). Dads and moms who sign-up for a family plan can get two free smartphones of their choice. Yeah, I know, wireless providers offer free cell phones all the time. But those free mobiles phones are usually the less expensive, older models. In the T-Mobile Father’s Day promotion, dads and moms can get ANY PHONE in the T-Mobile store for FREE — like the new myTouch 3G Slide ($430 without contract or $180 with contract), the new HTC HD2 ($450 without contract or $200 with contract), and the new Garminfone ($450 without contract or $200 with contract). Too bad T-Mobile is not allowed to sell iPhones (yet?).

When the people over at RingCentral asked me to try out their hosted phone system, the geek dad in me couldn’t say no. Yeah I know, a virtual PBX is not exactly a topic I usually cover on my dad blog. But I can see value in a hosted phone service for work-at-home dads and moms. Why order a separate work line when you can manage all your calls with RingCentral? And if you’re a blogger with a service or product for sale, you can market a toll-free number from RingCentral (instead of your home or cell number). BTW, other than a three month test trial, I did not receive any compensation for writing this review.
