My son and I saw an early screening of Thor: The Dark World last Monday. We loved it, but I was surprised the film was more of a science fiction story than a superhero story. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of ass kicking by Thor and other Asgardians. But there’s also space ships and worm holes, which I didn’t expect. Thor: The Dark World (Marvel Studios) opens in theaters today. The 112-minute movie is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some suggestive content. My oldest son and I saw an early screening of Iron Man 3. We loved it! The new Ironman movie isn’t as awesome as the Avengers movie. But I enjoyed the story more and there’s plenty of action even though there’s only one superhero. And yes, Stan Lee is in this Marvel film too. This time, he’s a judge of a beauty contest. Lucky guy. Iron Man 3 (Marvel Studios) opens in theaters today (May 3rd). Continue reading for the full review.
My son and I saw an advance movie screening of Captain America: The First Avenger (Marvel Studios) last night. In this superhero movie, a wimpy Steve Rogers tries several times to join the army in the 1940’s. He failed every time until he was recruited to take part in a secret program. He’s injected with an experimental serum that transform him into a super soldier (Captain America). Meanwhile, Hydra (the Nazi’s science and weapons program) has developed a weapon that can destroy America. In the second half of the movie, it’s Captain America and his men fighting the Red Skull and his Hydra minions. Bottom line: of the four superhero movies I’ve seen this summer, Captain America is only third on my list. I like Captain America: The First Avenger, but I like Thor (first) and Green Lantern (second) better. I did like the film better than X-Men: First Class. Captain America: The First Avenger will open this Friday, July 22nd.
