Easy Canvas Prints Review and Giveaway

Check out the wrapped canvas print below. I love the texture of canvas and I love the canvas print Easy Canvas Prints sent me for review (they’re also giving another one away on my dad blog, but you have to use your own photo). I received a 8×10 wrapped canvas print, which is fine for my home office. However, if you’re going to display the canvas in your living room, I would suggest going with a larger size. I ordered my canvas with a 1.5″ thickness for a gallery look. If you plan to frame your canvas, you should select the standard .75″ thickness. I also ordered my print with a mirror image for the borders (photo image mirrors around the edge of the canvas print). I love the look of mirror image around the borders. Other border options include image wrap (photo wraps around the edge) and border color. Optional color finishing include sepia, and black and white. BeFunky Photo Effects Giveaway

Over Labor Day weekend, I played around with BeFunky, which is an online photo effects application. BeFunky simplifies photo editing and effects for dads and moms. The BeFunky photo app features over 190 special effects. Dads and moms can also use BeFunky to add elements to their photos (such as speech bubbles, cool effects, and frames). BeFunky also includes tools for adjusting colors and brightness (auto or manual adjustments). BeFunky is easy to use (just one click for each filter — unless you want to change the default filter settings). According to their website, BeFunky (Facebook | Twitter) offers unlimited photo storage. BeFunky is free, but if you want to be able to save in high resolution, you need to upgrade to Premium (resolution up to 2500 x 2500 px) or Professional (up to 4000 x 4000 px resolution). Premium membership is $25 per year (or $5/month) and Professional membership is $100 per year (or $15/month).

I’ve only used BeFunky for a few hours, but I am impressed. Their web service is much easier to use than Photoshop and their Premium and Professional memberships are certainly affordable. As I mentioned before, BeFunky has over 190 photo filters. I’ve highlighted some of the special effects below. The first photo is the original photo I uploaded to BeFunky.

I Love Her to Infinity and Beyond

My little girl is turning five this week. Like many dads and moms, I feel like the five years went by way too quickly.

Then I snap out of it and realize the Little Monkey has been tormenting me for over 157,788,000 seconds. She’s so cute and very bright, but she’s also incredibly stubborn and very emotional ~~like her mom~~. If I should try to console her when she’s in one of her terrible moods, the little monster would rip my heart out, grind it up in a blender, drink it like a smoothie, and burp. Then she’ll put on her sad face and has the nerve to tell me I don’t love her because I don’t have a heart.

Editingg Photo Editing Giveaway

Like many dads and moms, I shoot a lot of photos of my kids. I use a Canon PowerShot A540, which is a point and shoot camera a few generations old (the latest version is the PowerShot A1100 IS). The PowerShot A540 is a nice little camera, but sometimes the exposure is a little off (it can’t be me because I’m perfect). Luckily, I can adjust the lighting and colors with a program like Adobe Photoshop Elements when I need to post incorrectly exposed photos on my dad blog. For the dads and moms who don’t have the know-how or time to use photo editing software, there is a company call Editingg (Facebook | Twitter).

I Love My Child With All My Spleen

Even though Little Disney’s health problems has reduced my life span by about 50 million years, I love him with all my heart and spleen.

The good news is that Little Disney is off the GN (gastric nasal) feeding tube. The doctor said he has been on it too long. The GN tube is only suppose to be a short-term solution (one or two months). Our little one had been on the GN-tube for five months. Even though he has been gaining weight with the GN tube (he reached the 30th percentile), the doctor said it was time for the G-tube (gastric feeding tube). The G-tube requires drilling a hole into the tummy and inserting the feeding tube directly into the stomach.

The Crazy Things Dads Do

My kids hate it when Little Disney pulls out his feeding tube because they know I tend to do crazy dad things when that happens — like insist on taking photos of all the children together. For some strange reason, I like taking a photograph of the toddler when he doesn’t have something sticking out of his nose. I’m crazy that way. The kids better watch out because I might do something even crazier — like kiss and hug them. And if I mutate into a completely loony dad, I might even tell the kids something crazy like I love them.

I know other dads and moms have said this many time, but life is one big blur. It seems like the school year just started and now it’s already spring break. In less than three months, the school year will be over and my oldest girl will turn into a drama tween. And in less than six months, my youngest daughter will turn five, start kindergarten, and accidentally blow up the school.

When I was a geeky kid, the school year crawled along at impulse power. Now that I’m a dad, life zooms along at warp speed. Anyone out there know how to slow down the daddy ship without blowing up the warp engines?

Dairy Free, Egg Free Birthday Cake

The Little Monkey and I baked Little Disney a birthday cake on Saturday (his birthday was last Wednesday, but he was sick and didn’t stop vomiting until Saturday). Because my son is allergic to eggs and dairy, we used Duncan Hines cake mix and frosting. Unlike Betty Crocker, some of the Duncan Hines cake mixes and frosting do not contain milk. In place of eggs, we used Ener-G Egg Replacer (free of gluten, wheat, casein, dairy, egg, yeast, soy, nut, low protein, rice). I bought the Ener-G Egg Replacer at Whole Foods, but you also order it from Amazon if you can’t find it. BTW, everyone carry Betty Crocker cake mixes and frosting, but only a handful of stores carry Duncan Hines cake mixes and frosting. And when the stores do stock them, they only carry a few flavors (why do they stock lemon cake mix, but not lemon frosting?).

Baby Turns One

Little Disney turns one on Wednesday (March 3rd). He had a rough first year [H1N1; seizures; food allergies: milk, eggs, peanuts, tomatoes, and shrimp; Failure To Thrive (FTT) Syndrome; severe eczema (his skin is rough like a lizard and he scratches himself bloody); and acid reflux]. Hopefully his second year will be much better.

On the positive side, Little Disney started walking a month ago. And thanks to the feeding tube, he’s now in the 25th percentile (weight). Unfortunately, he still doesn’t eat and the doctor won’t take him off the IV until he’s in the 50th percentile (will probably take another year – ugggh).

Happy Birthday, Little Disney! Daddy and mommy loves you very much.

The outlaws gave my kids some goodluck money (red envelopes) for Chinese New Year. Take a look at the dollhouse my daughter bought with her money.

It’s a Fisher-Price Super Friends Batcave. And no, this dad wasn’t there to help her pick out the Batman playset. My wife tried to encourage the Little Monkey to pick a less expensive Kai-lan or Dora girly toy, but my little girl refused.

Talk about awkward. Whenever people see our baby with a feeding tube, they do a double take and then quickly look away. You can tell they want to say something like, “Hey, did you know there’s a tube sticking out of your baby’s nose?“

Thank goodness they feel too uncomfortable to ask. Otherwise my response would have been, “How did that happen? He didn’t have anything stuck up his nose a second ago.“

Or “Yeah, we know. Baby lost a bet and now he has to live with the consequence.“

Maybe I should play the Asian card, “It’s our custom. This is how we let people know our baby is seeking a soulmate.“

Well, the super fattening prescription formula backfired. After almost two weeks, baby lost weight because he cries bloody murder whenever we try to give him the bottle. So now we have to use a feeding tube to pump the super fattening prescription formula up his nose and into his little tummy. [Note to couch potato dads: we have confirmed it — you can use the feeding tube to pump beer directly into your belly (TV remote not included with feeding tube).]

My Little Tomboy

When I feel like punishing myself, I take my children to Target to check out the toys. There’s nothing more fun for a dad than having your children ask you to buy one toy after another. When that doesn’t work, the kids change their tactics and start telling me what toys they want for Christmas and their birthdays. They don’t really need to tell me. There’s an IV Attached to His Head

Has anyone seen a scalp IV before? I hadn’t until I went to the ER recently and saw my baby with an IV attached to his head. If the situation wasn’t so serious, I would probably have laughed. I have never heard of such a thing before and I’ve seen many episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. The ER staff could not find a good vein in his arms so they stuck the IV in baby’s head. He hated it and eventually pulled it out.

Goodbye Polaroid, Hello Rollip

I was playing around with Rollip today. Rollip is a Web 2.0 application, but I like to think of it as a Gen X app because the web service will appeal to Generation X moms and dads. My mom used a Polaroid camera when I was a kid and I thought it was so cool when the photos magically developed right before my eyes. It will be a sad day for Gen X dads and moms when Polaroid stop selling their instant film (I think this is the last year). You can buy a Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera with a built-in mobile printer. The Polaroid PoGo is neat and offers instant gratification, but the prints doesn’t have the classic look and feel of a vintage Polaroid picture.

Now thanks to Rollip.com, you can transformed your digital photos into an old Polaroid. The GenX app gives your photo a vintage look. However, the converted photo doesn’t magically develop right before your eyes. And of course, you don’t get the instant gratification of the classic Polaroid cameras.

Deja Vu Dad

When you’re a dad with four kids, you can’t help but have deja vu moments. You’ll find yourself reliving moments you have experienced previously. Take a look for yourself and get a glimpse of a dad’s life with four cute kids. I took the first photo of my two youngest kids a few days ago and it reminded me of a photo I took several years ago of my two oldest kids. Seeing the two photos together kinda feels like someone pressed the rewind button to my life as a dad.

First Day of School

Today is the first day of school for Spiderboy (first grade) and the Little Princess (fourth grade). Because Labor Day landed on the seventh this year, school in the Portland area started about a week later than last year (there must be a tear in the time-space continuum because summer break didn’t seem any longer).

This school year should be an interesting one. The school district redrew the school boundaries and our kids had to transfer to a new K-8 school. Both of my kids were well liked at their old K-5 school. At the new school, my kids only know two people in their classes. It’ll be interesting to see how the kids will adjust to being the new kids. Will they fit in or will they be one of dweebs that gets stuffed in a locker?

It seems like it has been ages since I’ve written anything on this dad blog about my oldest child, the Little Princess. She turned nine last June. Nine is halfway to eighteen. Her first life is half over. In another nine years, she’ll be leaving the nest for college and start her second life. I’ll be sad when she goes. Right now I’m just enjoying our time together — like a week ago when I asked her to sit in front of the camera so I can play around with the manual exposure setting on my Canon point and shoot camera. How can a dad not love a daughter like this?

Oh no! I’m turning into a moose.

Happy birthday to daddy’s little girl. Little Monkey is four years old today. This past year, my little girl was the most adorable daughter a dad blogger could ever imagine. This was totally unexpected because when my daughter was two, she use to scream at me if I looked at her when she was mad at mommy. I didn’t do anything other than looked at her! I can’t wait to see what the Little Monkey will be like now that she is four. Hopefully more adorableness and no more death curses.

Little Disney – Three Months

What a big difference a couple of months can make. After one month, I wanted to return Little Disney for a full refund (minus a 15% restocking fee). After three months, I want my wife to have 20 more babies. He’s that cute.

At three months, Little Disney no longer torments us by waking up every few minutes at night. He also cries in a demonic manner less often. Now, Little Disney can laugh and smile when he’s happy. By smile, I don’t mean one of those fake smiles people give their in-laws. When Little Disney smiles, he really means it.

Little Disney can also talk now. Not with real words, but by cooing. When I talk to him, he coos back at me. I’m going to give him the benefit of doubt and assume he’s saying nice things to me and not talking back at me like my other three kids.

On the down side, Little Disney is losing his hair and has really bad eczema. My wife blames the receding hairline on me because once I said it would be nice to have a bald baby. All our kids were born with lots of hair. I think it has something to do with my werewolf DNA.

Little Disney – One Month

Last Friday, Little Disney turned one month old. He doesn’t do a whole lot other than sleep, suck, cry, pee, and poop. However, sometimes he does show off his mult-tasking skill by crying, peeing, and pooping at the same time.

How to Create an Awesome Photograph

Sometimes I like to think of myself as a photographer, but in reality, I’m just a sexy geek dad with a manly Canon PowerShot A540 point and shoot camera. I also use Adobe Photoshop Elements software for the post production work (Elements is much, much cheaper than the full Photoshop product). In the dark age of film, I use to do the post production work in the darkroom. And unlike software, if you make a mistake dodging and burning photographs, you can’t hit the undo button. For you younglings out there, a darkroom is a room for making prints, not making out.

Most of the photos I take are just snapshots. However, sometimes I actually plan the photo ahead of time — like the Naked Baby – Day 14 photo. In my opinion, planning and post production software are the keys to creating decent photographs without a digital SLR, photo studio, or fancy lighting equipment.

For example, here are the basic steps I took for last week’s Naked Baby photo:

The photo was taken in the evening and the background was my wife’s black shirt
The camera flash was disabled — otherwise the flash would have made the background too bright
Track lighting was the light source for the photograph
The camera was set to manual mode: shutter speed of 1/40 second and an aperture setting of f/2.6
The sepia tone filter in Photoshop Elements was applied to the photograph (the track lights made the photo too orange)
The background was darkened with the Photoshop Elements brush tool

The Little Monkey isn’t jealous of Little Disney, but she misses mommy at night. Mommy use to sleep with the Little Monkey. Now mommy sleeps with the bobblehead. Every night now, the Little Monkey cries and screams. One night, my little girl even told me she didn’t want me. Then she threatened to poke out my eyes, suck out my brain, and cram my heart in the Diaper Genie. Dads live for moments like these. Enterprise, one to beam up.

Please God – put baby back inside mommy

Naked Baby – Day 14

Nake Baby – Day Seven

Little Disney can open both eyes now and follow movement. He still cries a lot, but not as often as the first few days. It must be very strange for him to go from a life of darkness to a world of light.
