Can you believe today is the first day of May and that Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner? According to History.com, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. Revelers in the United States mark the occasion with parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods. BTW, check out the video above. Chef Pati Jinich, host of the hit PBS series Pati’s Mexican Table, made it for my dad blog. In the video, she answered some of the questions I had about Avocados from Mexico. Continue reading for some interesting facts about avocados and a fun contest from Avocados from Mexico. The top prize is a $500 cash gift card. I could use that!
Did you know there are more than 123,000 patients who are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant? Probably not, right? I know I didn’t. Did you also know this month is National Donate Life Month? I didn’t know that either. It’s a great cause that was developed in partnership with Donate Life America and Genentech. According to the press material, Donate Life has found that 90% of Americans say that they support organ donation. However, only 30% are aware of the correct steps needed to be taken in order to become a donor.
Have you heard of Dairy Queen’s #GetUpsideDown promotion? During the month of April, as part of their 75th Fanniversary, Dairy Queen is serving their Blizzard treats upside down. And if the Blizzard Treat isn’t served upside down, you get a free Blizzard on your next visit. Cool, right? BTW, I am participating in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Dairy Queen. I received a product sample and promotional item to thank me for my participation. As always, the opinions expressed here are mine and I am not obligated to write a positive review.
Sorry everyone. I had to put the giveaway on hold. The contest will resume the first week of June. For those of you who have already entered, don’t worry, your entry will be saved in Rafflecopter. Once again, I am very sorry for having to take this giveaway offline.

Spring break is almost over for my kids. Earlier in the week, the kids went up to Seattle to visit their auntie. I didn’t go, but Dexter the monkey from Night at the Museum 3 went with them. We couldn’t fit everyone in the car, so I was voted off the trip. For the trip, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment sent us some goodies (Dexter, passport, travel journal, postcards, crayons and tote bag) to track Dexter’s adventures. BTW, Night at the Museum 3 is available now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital HD. The photo above is a bike ride in Portland. Check out the other photos below.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment recently sent us a bunch of goodies to host a family movie night. We watched Penguins of Madagascar (giveaway | review). This is actually the second time for my youngest son. He really likes the animated film. The main activity while watching the movie was making ice cream. We’ve never made ice cream before. It’s actually fairly easy with the YayLabs Ice Cream Ball — just add rock salt and ingredients. The product included several recipes. We made the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was yummy!
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment recently sent us a kit so we could host a movie night with the kids. One of our children had a school function, so it was just me and my three other kids. We watched Russell Madness Blu-ray and had a fun time. My youngest son and I actually saw Russell Madness a week prior, but we didn’t mind seeing it again. Russell Madness is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
My wife and I had a date night. OK, it wasn’t an official date night because we didn’t have a sitter. But we did make the kids stay in their rooms while we ate dinner and watched The Best of Me. We’ve seen the movie before (review), but we didn’t mind seeing it again. The film is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. You can’t go wrong with a Nicholas Sparks story on date night, right? BTW, as you can see in the photo above, one of our little monsters crashed our date night.
Have you heard of Blue Monday? Until recently, neither have I. According to my research, Blue Monday is suppose to be the most depressing day of the year. The date was calculated by Psychologist Cliff Arnall for a travel company to boost sales during the winter. The formula is based on factors such as weather conditions, debt level, time since Christmas, time since giving up on our New Year’s resolutions, low motivational levels and feeling of a need to take action. According to the material I received from Weight Watchers, the first ever Blue Monday was January 24, 2005.
