Father’s Day is just around the corner. I’m hoping to chill out with the kids and grill a fresh pizza or two next Sunday. That’s right, you can grill a pizza instead of baking it in the oven. It’s a new grilling trick I learned recently. My co-workers have told me about cooking their pizza in a smoker before, but I have never tried it until this past weekend. I don’t really like to cook, but grilling is different. For one thing, it’s outdoor and I usually feel more energized when I’m outside. Plus it’s also more fun to hang out with the kids outside. I live in Portland, Oregon and at times, it feels like it rains every day for ten months out of the year. It’s quite liberating to be outside when you’ve been cooped up inside the house with four kids for a million years. For instance, over the weekend I was grilling a pizza on a Big Green Egg grill while my two youngest kids were blowing bubbles, face painting and laughing. I know this sounds like a cliche, but I really couldn’t help but smile when I was watching them. Dads and moms live for a moment like this. I know it made my day.
I’m a busy dad so I like to make things easier on myself whenever possible. That’s why I purchased a couple of take ‘n’ bake pizzas from Papa Murphy’s. I used their online system to order a Hawaiian pan pizza and Cowboy thin crust pizza. They were both incredibly delicious, but my favorite was the Hawaiian pan pizza. Instead, they come in early every morning to make their dough from scratch, grate their 100% whole milk mozzarella, and hand slice their vegetables. That’s one of the reasons why Papa Murphy’s is the world’s largest take and bake pizza chain. Grilling a Papa Murphy’s gourmet pizza is easy. With a grill like the Big Green Egg, you open up the vents until it reaches 425 degrees. Then place the pizza on the grill with a heat shield. Next you adjust the vents to maintain the 425-degree temperature. Finally, bake the pizza for about 20 minutes. Be sure to check the pizza frequently by lifting the crust with a spatula and making sure it’s not burning. That’s it. Grilling a pizza really is that easy. BTW, you do not want to use a solid heat shield that completely covers the grill area. That will block the air flow and put out your charcoal fire.
