Today is National Doughnut Day! Go get your free donut at a participating store. From what I read, Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts (with beverage purchase) and Lamars are all offering free doughnuts today. We don’t have a Dunkin Donuts or Lamars in Portland, so I will be taking the kids to Krispy Kreme.
According to Wikipedia, National Doughnut Day was an event created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the men and women who served donuts to soldiers during World War. The first event started on June 7, 1938 when a young military doctor by the name of Morgan Pett gave eight dozen doughnuts to wounded soldiers. Today, the annual event is celebrated on the first Friday of June each year with both independent donut shops and large national franchises offering free doughnuts in the United States. Thank you Morgan Pett!
