5 Things You Should Know About Despicable Me 2

Despicable Me 2 | Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment

The kids and I saw an early screening of Despicable Me 2 last week. We loved the film and thought it was hilarious. Gru is funny, the girls are still adorable, and the Minions made everyone laugh through out the story. The new animated movie is about 98 minutes long and is rated PG. Despicable Me 2 (Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment) opens today at a theater near you.

Five Things You Should Know About Despicable Me 2

  1. You don’t need to see the first Despicable Me movie
Despicable Me 2 is a sequel to the first Despicable Me movie. However, you don’t need to see the first film to enjoy the second one. This is what you need to know about the first Despicable Me film. Gru, a criminal mastermind, is in competition with another criminal genius. Gru needs to steal something from the other dude. So he adopts three orphan sisters as pawns for a grand scheme. But Gru eventually develops feeling for the girls and changes his way because of them.

  2. Gru joins the Anti-Villain League
In Despicable Me 2, Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain League to find the super-villain who has stolen a chemical that can transform lifeforms into invincible mutant killing machines. At first Gru turns them down, but he changes his mind when his jam and jelly business doesn’t work out. Gru then goes undercover at a mall because that’s where the Anti-Villain League thinks the chemical is hidden. Gru’s mission is to identify the merchant who stole the chemical compound.

  3. A little bit of Gru in all dads
While Gru is working undercover, his oldest daughter falls in love with a boy. Because Gru is an over-protected father, he becomes distracted from his mission and goes crazy trying to protect his little girl. I think this is something most dads can relate to. My oldest daughter turned 13 last month and I’m not looking forward to they day when she wants to go out on a date. I suspect I will act the same way Gru behaved in Despicable Me 2.

  4. Love is in the air
Despicable Me 2 features two love stories. The first one, as I mentioned previously, is about Margo (the oldest of the three daughters). The second love story involves Gru and Lucy, an Anti-Villain League agent. From the start, you could tell Lucy is interested in Gru. Lucy even admits she was impressed by Gru’s work as a villain when he stole the moon in the first Despicable Me film. Gru, on the other hand, is reluctant to go on a date with anyone. He’s actually scared of women when it comes to romance.

  5. Steve Carell is hilarious
Steve Carell is wonderful as Gru. I saw him on a talk show last month. He wore a Gru costume and stayed in character during the entire interview. He’s hilarious in both the talk show and movie! Despicable Me 2 also features the excellent voices of Kristen Wiig (Lucy), Benjamin Bratt (Eduardo / El Macho), Miranda Cosgrove (Margo), Russell Brand (Dr. Nefario), Ken Jeong (Floyd), Steve Coogan (Silas), Elsie Kate Fisher (Agnes), Dana Gaier (Edith), Moises Arias (Antonio), Nasim Pedrad (Jillian), Kristen Schaal (Shannon), Pierre Coffin (Kevin the Minion, Bob the Minion, Stuart the Minion, other Minions, Evil Minions), Chris Renaud (additional Minions, Evil Minions, Italian Waiter), and Nickolai Stoilov (Arctic Lab Guard). The film was directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud.
