Garage Door Safety Tips and Giveaway – win a $25 Visa gift card

Garage Door Care ~ International Door Association (IDA)

Today on my dad blog, I’m going to share some garage door safety tips and then host a giveaway ($25 Visa gift card). The garage door safety tips I’m going to share are from the International Door Association. The IDA is a trade association with over 2,000 door and access system dealers and installers worldwide. The IDA offers a quick quiz on their website, Garage Door Care, to test you and your family’s garage door safety smarts. After taking their short quiz (I answered all five multiple-choice questions correctly), the site explains the safety reasons for the answers.

Garage Door Safety Challenge

Below are some do’s and don’ts parents should teach their children. They are easy to remember if your think of the acronym: D.O.O.R.

Garage D.O.O.R. Safety Tips

  • Doors are heavy — never stand, run or play under or near any garage door, especially when the door is open or moving.
  • Openers are for adults — never play with the button on the wall that opens and closes the garage door.
  • Ouch! — never touch any part of a moving garage door. Your fingers and hands can get hurt!
  • Remotes are for adults — never play with the remote control in the car or on Mom and Dad’s keychain.

  1. I learned that the push button wall control for a garage door operating system should be mounted at least five feet off the floor, out of the reach of children.

  2. Don’t back into it, breaking it, then disable the safety so you can get it down, then forget that it’s been disabled…

    My mom did this.

  3. kids should never play under garage doors.

  4. Always keep items away from the door so there is nothing to get caught in its pathway……….. big one… keep children out of the garage away from the garage door , accidents happen!

  5. Thanks for the giveaway…every responsible family member should know how to operate the manual override to open the door in case of power outage, or other emergency.
