Movie Review ~ Ice Age: Continental Drift
I saw a movie screening of Ice Age: Continental Drift with two of my kids last weekend. My kids loved the film. However, my nine-year old son didn’t think it was as funny as Madagascar 3. Ice Age 4 (20th Century Fox) opens in theaters today. Below is a quick summary of the film. Continue reading for the full movie review of Ice Age: Continental Drift.

It’s the fourth installment
Ice Age: Continental Drift is the fourth installment of the Ice Age series. You don’t really need to see the first three movies to understand what’s going in the latest Ice Age movie. To be honest, I’ve seen the first three films, but I don’t remember much about them (it’s been ten years since the first Ice Age movie). The only thing you really need to know about the Ice Age series are the main characters, which are Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth, Diego the sabre-toothed cat, and Scrat the saber-toothed squirrel. In Continental Drift, Manny, Sid, Diego, and Sid’s grandmother are separated from the other animals when the continental breaks up. The rest of the story is about Manny’s group trying to reunite with the rest of the herd.
Scrat is still funny
If you’ve seen any of the previous Ice Age films, then you know Scrat is a funny character. As usual, he’s obsessed with acorns. This time, his hunt for acorns causes their continent to break up into the continents as we know them now. Scrat appears in several scenes in the story and he’s pretty funny in the scenes he’s in. Scrat, in my opinion, makes the fourth installment of the Ice Age more enjoyable for parents.
Prehistoric pirates sail on a ship-shaped iceberg
While out at sea, Manny and his friends are captured by a gang of pirates. The story takes place millions of years ago, so the pirates sail on an iceberg shaped like a ship. The evil pirates are led by a ruthless ape (Captain Gutt). Manny and his friends escape, but Guut and his pirates are determined to recapture them. The chase and battles between Manny’s group and the pirates take up a good portion of Ice Age 4.
Diego gets a girlfriend
Jennifer Lopez is in Ice Age 4. She is the voice of Shira, who is a saber-toothed pirate cat. After Manny and his friends escaped from the Captain Gutt, Shira is separated from the rest of the pirates. She joins Manny’s group and then defects back to the pirates later in the story. But before she returned to the pirates, Shira and Diego fell in love with other.
Wanda Sykes steals the show
Ray Romano (Manny), John Leguizamo (Sid), Denis Leary (Diego), Queen Latifah (Ellie, Manny’s wife), and Keke Palmer (Peaches, Manny’s daughter) are the voices of the main characters. However, Wanda Sykes stood out in Ice Age 4. She is the voice of Sid’s funny grandmother (Granny). Her character livens up the movie in the scenes she’s in. Ice Age: Continental Drift also featured the voices of Jennifer Lopez (Shira), Nicki Minaj (Steffie), Peter Dinklage (Captain Gutt), Chris Wedge (Scrat), Patrick Stewart (Ariscratle), Aziz Ansari (Squint), Joy Behar (Eunice), Christopher Campbell (Creature Siren), Alain Chabat (Silas), Ester Dean (Female Siren), Aubrey Graham (Ethan Drake), Jason Fricchione (Mammoth), Nick Frost (Flynn), Josh Gad (Louis), Ben Gleib (Marshall), George Jacobs (Beaver), Heather Morris (Katie), Kunal Nayyar (Gupta), James Palumbo (Panicked Start), Josh Peck (Eddie), Simon Pegg (Buck), Ally Romano (Meghan), Seann William Scott (Crash), Matthew Simmons (Teen Elk), Eddie ‘Piolin’ Sotelo (Uncle Fungus), Meghan Thurmeier (Baby Bird), Alan Tudyk (Milton / Hunky Siren), and Rebel Wilson (Raz). The film was directed by Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier.
