(YouTube video link: Entertaining Tips from Chefs Stephen Kalil and Jody Denton)

I recently sent some questions to Chefs Stephen Kalil and Jody Denton over at the Frito Lay Flavor Kitchen. They sent me their response in the above YouTube video, which was totally unexpected. If you’re planning on entertaining on Memorial Day, then you’re going want to check out the YouTube video above. Their tips cover cooking, grilling, stress-free party preparation, and recipes. I think the tips are really helpful, and I plan on following their tips this Memorial weekend and also in the future for other get-togethers at our house. BTW, thanks to Frito Lay, I’m also giving away party packs to five readers of my dad blog.

If you don’t have time to watch the video right now, here is my quick summary of their tips:

  • How do you determine how many dishes to prepare without requiring guests to RSVP?
Start with products that if not used during the party, can be used at another time.

  • What’s a good time to buy food items for a holiday like Memorial Day?
Buy perishable items one or two days before you need them. Buy non-perishable items several days to a week prior to the event.

  • How do you throw a good party without a lot of stress?
Set up the food items near the grill so you can talk with the guests.

  • How do you plan a menu that appeals to everyone?
Offer a variety of dishes — some dishes for hearty eaters and some dishes for light eaters. In addition, set up a food bar so guests can create their own custom dishes that will appeal to them.

  • Is there an easy way to clean-up after the party?
Use eco-friendly disposable plates and utensils. As a hint to your guests, place two large bins lined with garbage bags in an area that can be easily seen. One bin is for recyclable items and the other one is for non-recyclables.

  1. Not this Memorial weekend, but the weekend after. This weekend I will be travelling to Texas where, next weekend, my son graduates medical school. We will be having a reception for family and friends. We will be ordering BBQ, but will be doing everything else ourselves.

  2. Not entertaining, donating blood at a local blood drive and hanging at the house with my dogs. Unemployment has put a stop to my life these days, what a drag.

  3. Yes, I’m going to have my family over, and have a nice dinner. And enjoy everyone’s company..and after that, we’ll just wing it…and let the evening take on a life of its own…it’s called flying by the seat of your pants! Ha! :-)

  4. I am not entertaining this weekend. I am going to cedar point where I will in some way be entertained!

  5. WISH WE WERE ENTERTAINING BUT HAVE TO WORK THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND. HAVE SOME GRAD PARTIES COMING UP THOUGH!

  6. In the comments area on the giveaway post, answer this question: are you entertaining this Memorial weekend?

yep..im stuffing my face and watching the race

  7. Yeah, My husband and I are going to have his family over and grill out on the Patio. Lots of food and fun!

  8. Oh yes, not only am I entertaining but I am doing it at my mother-in-law’s house. So, I have to prepare everything, pack it up (some of it in ice), drive for two hours, unpack it all, do the rest of the prep, cook and then clean-up (and make coffee). Perversely maybe, I love doing this. I think I may go with the eco-friendly paper-goods though.

  9. Ken! How cute is that video, and I can’t get over that the chefs made it just for you! Daddy Forever Blog had arrived, I tell ya’!

In the video Chef Jody Denton put two chips on that burger; which looks great to me. I’m a big fan of potato chips on a tuna sandwich too, Oscar from ‘The Odd Couple’ style, yeah!

  10. No, we aren’t entertaining this Memorial day. The hubby and I are going to spend a nice quiet weekend together.

  11. I did not entertain for Memorial Day. We spent the day watching the parade, grilling (in house family only) and playing on a slip n slide! :)

  12. Yes , we entertained this Memorial Day week-end. It was a dual party. My husband’s birthday was last week so we combined our festivities
