Cook'n Recipe Organizer ~ DVO Enterprises

Over the weekend, I’ve played with a software program called Cook’n Recipe Organizer. As the name implies, Cook’n is a computer tool for organizing your recipes. But that’s not all it does. Cook’n has other features that will appeal to many dads and moms. In my opinion, its coolest feature is the ability to capture and save Internet recipes. You don’t have to manually type in the ingredient list and instructions. Isn’t that incredibly useful? And thanks to DVO Enterprises, a reader of my dad blog can win a copy of Cook’n Recipe Organizer (Windows or Mac version). Cook’n has a list price of $99.95, but you can currently purchase it for $79.95. In addition, my readers can get a 50% discount by using this promo code: db-dforever

If you’re like my wife and I, then you probably have a bunch of recipes in various formats. For instance, we have recipes from cookbooks, recipes bookmarked in our browsers, recipes sent to us via email, and recipes clipped from magazines. With Cook’n, you can file all your recipes in one place. With online recipes, moms and dads can use the software’s capture feature to automatically add the recipe to Cook’n. With email recipes, parents can copy and paste the recipe into Cook’n. Unfortunately, recipes from cookbooks and magazines have to be manually added into Cook’n. Luckily, you can find many of these recipes on the web or in one of the brand name e-cookbooks formatted for Cook’n.

Cook’n Recipe Organizer is essentially five products in one:

Electronic Cookbook
With Cook’n Recipe Organizer, you can browse pictures or search for recipes stored in your Cook’n database. It includes an advance interface that lets you filter the results (appetizers, main dishes, desserts, etc). In addition, Cook’n features a proprietary search engine and built-in web browser for searching and capturing recipes from the net. With the capture feature, you don’t have to manually enter the ingredient list and instructions. It’s a big time saver. Cook’n also has a feature that suggests recipes based on the ingredients you have on hand. No, it’s not psychic — you have to tell the software what ingredients you have.

Personal Home Nutritionist
This is another useful feature I love about Cook’n. The software can analyze recipes and generate nutrition info about the recipes. Its database includes labels of about 10,000 food products. As a result, you can use the nutrition database to compared different brands of a particular item in your recipe. Isn’t that neat?

Grocery Shopping Assistant
This is another neat feature of Cook’n. Moms and dads can easily generate a shopping list based on the recipes selected. The software organizes your list by category (fruits and vegetables, cooking and baking, dairy, etc) and even gives you an approximate cost of the food items. The software also converts package sizes for you. Now that’s really helpful! There’s been many times I had to figure out how many fluid ounces are in a cup. That’s not exactly something I know at the top of my head.

Recipe Manager
This is actually the main purpose of Cook’n — organizing and managing your recipes. In addition to automatically capturing online recipes, you can also easily add recipes by hand because its quick-fill feature does some of the typing for you. You can also use Cook’n software to email recipes to friends or print them out (the recipes, not your friends) on pre-formatted 3×5 or 4×6 cards. Here’s another neat feature of the software: it can easily adjust the recipe for different serving sizes. I can usually figure how to double a recipe, but it’s harder to convert a recipe for four servings into one that serves six. But thanks to Cook’n, it’s a snap to change the recipe for more people.

Menu Planner
My wife and I are not really big on menu planning. But this feature will come in real handy for planning the dishes for our kids’ birthday parties and our annual Halloween party. The menu planner is fairly easy to use. You just drag and drop recipes to create menus for a particular day, week, month, or special occasion.
