Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Movie (20th Century Fox)

My youngest daughter and I saw a movie screening of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (20th Century Fox) last weekend. Chipwrecked is the third movie in the Chipmunks series. Bottom line: little ones will like Chipwrecked for the cute Chipmunks and Chipettes, the singing and the humor. Dads and moms will probably like this movie too if they like the first two Chipmunks films. On the other hand, if parents didn’t like the first two movies, they probably won’t like this one either. My youngest daughter (age six) loved it. I thought it was better than the second movie, but not as good as the first one. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked opens today. The 87-minute movie is rated G.

The Chipmunks and Chipettes go on a cruise
In Chipwrecked, the Chipmunks and Chipettes go a cruise with Dave. They are on the way to a music award show, but thanks to Alvin (big surprise), they end up marooned on a deserted island. While on the island, they bump into Zoe. According to her, she’s been stuck on the island for years. She’s a little looney after spending a lot of time alone on the island. But that’s not all, she also has a secret.

Some humorous adult content
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked included some content for adults. For instance, there was a satire on Gollum (Lord of the Ring) and another satire on Wilson the ball (Cast Away). Some adults will find those scenes humorous, but kids will be clueless. The movie is rated G, so the adult humor is not crude or inappropriate for children.

Dave returns full time to the Chipmunks
Unlike the last Chipmunks movie, Jason Lee (Dave) is in most of this movie (in the Squeakquel, Dave was only in the first few minutes of the film). David Cross (Ian) is also back in this move. As in the first two Chipmunks movies, Ian is still the chipmunks’ nemesis. New to the cast is Jenny Slate, who played the part of Zoe. The Chipmunks and Chipettes were voiced by Justin Long (Alvin), Matthew Gray Gubler (Simon), Jesse McCartney (Theodore), Amy Poehler (Eleanor), Anna Faris (Jeanette), Christina Applegate (Brittany), and Alan Tudyk (Simone — Simon’s alter ego). Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked was directed by Mike Mitchell.

The Chipmunks are born this way
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked features a variety of songs. These include:

  • Born This Way [Lady Gaga]
  • Firework [Katy Perry]
  • Bad Romance [Lady Gaga]
  • Trouble [Pink]
  • Vacation [The Go-Go's]
  • Say Hey (I Love You) [Michael Franti & Spearhead]
  • SOS [Rihanna]
  • Survivor [Destiny's Child]
