Kung Fu Panda 2 Movie Review – no extra charge for awesomeness
Last Saturday, the kids and I saw a free movie screening of Kung Fu Panda 2 (Dreamworks). Po, the Furious Five (Tigress, Monkey, Viper, Mantis and Crane), Shifu, and Mr. Ping are back in the sequel. New characters include Lord Shen, Master Croc, The Soothsayer, Master Oxen, and Master Thundering Rhino. In this sequel, Po no longer needs to prove he is the Dragon Warrior. However, he still can’t help but act like Homer Simpson at times. Bottom line: dads, moms, and kids will probably love Kung Fu Panda 2. The 3D movie is coming soon to a theater near you this Thursday (May 26th).
Do you need to see the first Kung Fu Panda movie?
Not really. You can understand the sequel without seeing the first movie. The only thing you really need to know is Po is the Dragon Warrior even though he’s chubby, goofy and clearly not the best kung-fu expert. You have to see the first movie to understand why Po is the Dragon Warrior, but you don’t really need to know why to watch the sequel.
What is the Kung Fu Panda 2 movie about?
In the sequel to Kung Fu Panda, the villain is Lord Shen the peacock. Shen has taken over Gongmen City with a powerful weapon that can defeat kung fu. Capturing Gongmen City is only the first part of Shen’s plan. His master plan is to use his new weapon to conquer all of China. In the movie, Po and the Furious Five have to travel to Gongmen City and stop Lord Shen. Somehow, they have to figure a way to use kung-fu to stop a weapon that can destroy kung fu. There are actually two interrelated storylines in Kung Fu Panda 2. The other storyline I have not mentioned yet involves the mystery of Po’s real parents. If you have seen the first movie, you know Po’s dad is a goose. Obviously, a goose can’t be Po’s biological dad because Po is a panda. Hence the mystery and second storyline, what happened to Po’s biological parents? You can see the Kung Fu Panda 2 movie trailer on their official website.
Who’s in the movie?
Kung Fu Panda 2 features the voices of Jack Black (Po), Angelina Jolie (Tigress), Jackie Chan (Monkey), Seth Rogen (Mantis), Lucy Liu (Viper), David Cross (Crane), Dustin Hoffman (Shifu), James Hong (Mr. Ping), Gary Oldman (Lord Shen), Jean-Claude Van Damme (Master Croc), Michelle Yeoh (The Soothsayer), Dennis Haysbert (Master Oxen), and Victor Garber (Master Thundering Rhino).
What is Kung Fu Panda 2 rated?
The movie is rated PG for mild violence. It’s kinda of hard to make a kung-fu movie without some of the characters getting beat-up, but I think the humor and animations kinda soften the fight scenes in the movie (compare to a live action film).
When is the best time to go to the restroom?
Kung Fu Panda 2 is about 90 minutes long. Most kids should be able to make it through without having to go to the restroom. But if you have to, you don’t want to miss the beginning of the movie because it provides background information about the main villain. A good time to go is about a third way into the movie when Po and the Furious Five are travelling by boat to Gongmen City.
Is Kung Fu Panda 2 worth paying extra for 3D?
Probably not. Having the extra depth is nice, but in my opinion, not worth paying extra for. However, I must admit, I ducked when dumplings came flying out at me from Po’s mouth. That was a neat effect.
Will kids like the Kung Fu Panda 2?
I took two of my kids (ages five and seven) to see the sequel and they both loved the film. The characters are cute and funny, and the storyline is relatively easy to understand. BTW, the movie isn’t intended for toddlers. I’m bringing this up because a couple of parents brought their toddlers along. The kids got bored and wanted to leave. The parents wanted to watch so the toddlers ended up crying for over five minutes before the parents gave up and took the kids to the lobby.
Will dads and moms like the movie?
If you like the first Kung Fu Panda, you will probably like the sequel as well. There’s action, humor (but not adult humor), and interrelated storylines. The flashbacks of the second story line is one of the best things I like about the movie. The characters and sceneries are also very detailed and beautifully drawn/generated. However, if you didn’t like the first Kung Fu Panda movie, you’re probably not going to like the sequel — different story, but the main characters are still the same.

Looks like a good movie. I am looking for stuff to do after the kids get out of school next week. Thanks for the review!
Luckily for us, we still have 3-4 weeks before school is out.
