Toys of the Year
Many people have heard of the Oscars (the academy awards, not the hot dog), but how many dads and moms know what TOTYs are? FYI for dads and moms, TOTYs are Oscars for the toy industry. TOTY is short for Toy of the Year. For the last ten years, members and associate members of the Toy Industry Association (TIA) have selected the top toys for the year. Read on to see this year’s winners of the Toy of the Year Awards.

My son got a Bakugan 7-in-1 Maxus Dragonoid for Christmas. With a list price of $40 ($34 at Amazon), this geek dad thinks the toy is overpriced for what you get. My son, however, doesn’t agree with me. He thinks the toy is so cool. - Girl Toy of the Year

A talking truck sounds more fun than a non-talking one, but otherwise I’m not sure what’s so special about the toy truck. I don’t understand the Bilibo toy, but the open-ended toy has won several awards. - Activity Toy of the Year
Crayon Town by Wild Planet Entertainment
Crayon Town combines the fun of coloring with real 3-D play. I think my kids would like Crayon Town. - Game of the Year
Sort It Out! by University Games
A family card game that involves sorting items. My nine year old would probably like this game. - Outdoor Toy of the Year
My 1st Scooter by Radio Flyer
Most kids like scooters and this one looks kinda cool. - Specialty Toy of the Year
Captain Owen’s Dolphin Explorer Boat by Sprig Toys
Looks like the toys were designed for pretend play. The set kinda reminds me of the superhero action figures my kids play with it. Except the dolphins probably don’t have any special powers.

Why am I not surprised to see Bakugan there? :)

I guess I’m getting old because I don’t understand why boys love Bakugan so much.
What is it about the Bakugans? Roo collects them and rolls them around. He has no idea how to play the game, though. Sometimes he will roll in a ball on the floor and when I touch him he springs out, just like a Bakugan!
My son doesn’t know how to play the game either so he makes up his own rules. Sometimes he changes the rules while we’re playing. Cheater.
You call him a cheater. I call him a good player :) I have no clue how to play the game but I’m sure it is making a fortune off of kids who do.
I should learn how to play the right way, but I just can’t get into Bakugan. Why couldn’t use superhero characters in place of Bakugans?

@Daddy Forever Exactly, what happened to the good ol’ action figures :-) Which brings me to this question, you’ve been in a toy store for like a couple of dozen times (or more) what is your top pick?
Mine would be the new Marvel Superheroes’ toys the one that stands 3-4 inches tall. I love the Wolverine and Hulk figure. Of course, the Justice League Unlimited is also a personal fave.
I use to collect the 2″ action figures (both Marvel and DC). Then my son got a hold of them when he was four. Somehow he managed to break most of their arms. He wasn’t try to, but he’s not exactly gentle.
