Explore the Literacy House
The National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) recently launched a site that shows dads and moms how to transform routine daily activities like meal preparation and bath time into rich learning experiences for their children. According to research:

  • Children exposed to more spoken words earlier in life demonstrate richer vocabulary and early acquisition of literacy skills
  • Learning climate of the home positively impacts children's school readiness and language skills
  • The positive way parents interact with their children in the home helps children's literacy development

The NCFL's goal is to use the power of the family to promote a culture of learning.

While you are on the Box Tops for Education, be sure to check to see if your kids' teachers have all the items they need for their classrooms (via My Class Essentials).

The Fresh Air Fund Seeking Host Families
The Fresh Air Fund is seeking host families for this summer. Last year, The Fresh Air Fund's Volunteer Host Family program (Friendly Town) gave close to 5,000 New York City boys and girls (ages six to 18) free summer experiences in the country and the suburbs. Volunteer host families shared their friendship and homes in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. Thanks to host families who open up their homes for a few weeks each summer, children growing up in New York City's toughest neighborhoods have enjoyed the Fresh Air experience.

hmmm, that's pretty cool. I explored the kitchen. This must have been produced in Europe because I don't know anybody who has a stackable laundry machine in their kitchen :-) Anyway, it's very cool!

Apparently the literary house doesn't want me because it won't load for me. :( Maybe some other time. Will tell my husband about the game for the Ipod though!

I got the Firefly Night App. It is so much fun! Roo hasn't played it yet because he was in bed. I think he will really enjoy dragging fireflies into the jars. The number game is above his head right now, but I enjoy that one. And the music on that mode is very soothing. Thanks!
