California Raisins Super Bowl
Anyone remember the old California Raisins’ I Heard it Through the Grapevine commercials in the 80′s? Well, that’s today topic. California Raisins. Normally, I wouldn’t blog about raisins. But my blood pressure tests came out high the last four times. Now I have to cut back on food that are high in salt, fats, and sugar. I also have to stop drinking coffee (someone please pray for me). With the Super Bowl less than a week away, I’m scrambling for snack alternatives — like California Raisins (fat free, cholesterol free, and contains fiber, potassium, and antioxidants).
The people over at California Raisins must of have heard about my high blood pressure because they sent me a recipe for their Five-Spice Popcorn Snack Mix. They also sent me all the ingredients in the California Raisins recipe, which is a good move on their part. I hate grocery shopping. I know where the milk, bread, and fruits are, but I struggle to find some of the ingredients in recipes. That’s one of the reasons I prefer to cook stuff that comes out of a box, bag, or can (most of which are not good for my high blood pressure).
Read on to find out how you can win the ingredients in the photo below
The California Raisins Five-Spice Popcorn Snack Mix recipe has only 1 gram of saturated fat and no trans fat or cholesterol. It has 200mg of sodium (leave out the sesame sticks and chow mein noodles if you want to go lower), and 237mg of potassium (good for people with high blood pressure). The recipe was easy to make and didn’t take long. The kids and I tried out the snack mix. I like it, but it was too spicy for me. Next time, I’m going to reduce the amount of cayenne pepper (my wife thinks the Chinese 5-spice powder also made the mix spicy). The kids didn’t like it. They thought it was too spicy too and they prefer sweeter snacks. They would probably have loved the mix if I replaced the pepper with chocolate chips.
Now for the giveaway. You can win a set of ingredients to make the recipe by predicting the winner and final score of the Super Bowl between New Orleans and Indianapolis. The winner is the person who comes closest to the actual score (you must also predict the winner correctly). The deadline to enter is 3:30 pm Pacific Time on February 7, 2010. The giveway is limited to the US. In the meantime, check out the California Raisins recipes section.

No coffee!?! My prayers are coming to you by express mail. Man, I don’t think I’d make it without coffee. I hope your blood pressure improves. I’m laying bets on the stress of your little one’s health causing it, though, and not food.
The raisin idea sounds neat. I’m too lazy to make it, but it *sounds* good. The pictures of your kids are definitely cute. Feel better Daddy Forever!
As for the contest, I have no idea what a football score should even be, so count me out.
I think it’s both food and stress. I can work on the food part, but reducing stress is hard until baby can eat without a feeding tube.
And the kids helping too? Double score, dad! I’m just happy that thanks to your post I know who’s playing in the SuperBowl now. :) We planted fruit trees in our yard this past week, I’m channeling my energies into the physical exercise and fresh rewards of our yard with veggies and fruits – makes me feel better when I pop open my can of Mt. Dew. :)
Hugs,
Holly
I also have to work regularly (at least 150 minutes a week). Not sure where I will find the time.
Oh it would be a football question. I’ll say 21-14, New orleans on top. Feel free to send me my raisins now! LOL Adorable pics of the kids.
New Orleans Saints would win 28-10!
I am guessing the Saints will win 21-14
This Raisen/Popcorn mix sounds great. I’m going to try this.
I’d say the Saints 23-18.
Thanks so much.
I am guessing the Saints will win 24-17
Saints, 21-17.
the Saints are coming!!!!!!!
That sounds really yummy!
And no coffee!?! I have just recently acquired the taste for coffee and drink a cup just about every morning. This may sound silly to coffee drinkers, but it took me 25 years to learn to like the stuff! Now I’m addicted!
I have no idea about the Super Bowl score. I come in and watch the commercials and leave when the game comes back on.
I like the ads too. They’re funny!
I hate regular coffee, but love the super sweet French Vanilla instant coffee they sell at Costco.
Colts, 34-27.
Believe in Blue, baby – COLTS ALL THE WAY!
(You knew I had to put in my plug, right? *grin*)
BTW, reducing sodium intake will do its part to lower your blood pressure, too. I’ve been on a reduced-sodium diet for a couple of years now; it’s easier than you think.
Reducing salt has been my first priority. In the long term, it should get easier, but I’m use to eating really salty snacks.
Congratulations on your commitment to control your blood pressure. Thanks for the contest.
I predict a tie- 21-21 and the Saints will win in overtime.
saints 28-19
I know that the Saints want to win badly but I am for some reason I feel that the score will be

SAINTS 16
SAINTS OR COLTWS WHO CARES
Colts 24, Saints 21
that recipe doesn’t sound too bad. blood pressure is a tough thing to have to regulate. For me, I’m on blood pressure meds to filter my blood so my kidneys don’t have to do too much work. Generally, it’s a very cheap medication if it isn’t something you can do on your own. One of the $4 ones they’re selling now.
I’m hoping I can get the pressure down so I don’t have to take med.
Colts 42, Saints 28
I believe Peyton Manning is too good to lose. However–I’m going against my better judgement and saying the Saints will take it. 10-7
I love raisins. We go through one of those big buckets of them about every two weeks. And, yes, I remember that commercial. I seem to remember it being a bid deal too.
It was a hit back then. The ads also made claymation cool.
The Saints will win 24 to 17. Love the Popcorn Snack Mix recipe, thanks.
I say the Saint 28, Colts 21
Oh man am I poor at predictions. Personally I like the philosophy of may the snazziest uniform win …..but ….I will say the Saints over the Colts 17 to 13
It can be hard to get your pressure under control, but if you work really hard at it, you can beat it. Good luck with it!
I predict the Saints will beat the Colts 27-14.
Saints will win 21-14
Saints 23 – Colts 12
Indianapolis Colts – 35
New Orleans Saints – 24
