Target Super Bowl HDTV Specials
I don’t usually blog about sales, but Target sent me a preview of their Super Bowl specials for HDTV sets and I noticed they have a really good price for a 42″ Magnavox 1080p LCD HDTV ($499). The prices on the other HDTV’s might be good too, but my outlaws have been looking for a 40″ flat screen TV so I know $499 for a 42″ is a good deal — almost as good as the Black Friday specials and you don’t even have to wait in the cold at midnight in the hopes of getting one. The Target Super Bowl HDTV specials start this Sunday (January 31st). BTW, I think I’m the only dad in Oregon who does not have a flat screen TV. I’m still waiting for someone to send me one for review.

My husband has one in his office. All the rest are the boxy type with converter boxes. I know he wants a new one so I’ll tell him about this deal. Then I will inherit his old one, LOL.
Pick one up for me. A mounting kit too if you don’t mind.
We just got our Sunday paper with the Target ad. ours says the 42″ Magnavox is only 720p. Do you think it was a misprint?
Probably a typo. I see two 42″ listed on the Magnavox’s web site. One has a Blu-ray built-in. The non-Bluray (#42MF438B) specs are:
•LCD Full HD display, 1920 x 1080p.
•Integrated tuner decodes digital ATSC and QAM signals.
•Dolby Digital for movies or concerts in full surround sound.
•Dynamic Contrast gives enriched color performance.
•Stereo sound system.
•Multiple Audio/Video inputs (480i/p, 720p, 1080i).
•HDMI for full digital High Definition connection.

Target.com, which doesn’t carry the same stuff as the store, has another model listed (#42MF439B), but it’s also 1920 x 1080.
Unless Target (the store) has an old model on special, it’s probably 1080. I can’t see the official ad online until midnight Pacific time.
I saw the same 720p spec in the print version today, but the weekly ad posted online listed the TV as 1080p. I don’t which one is right.
I was reading the March issue of Consumer Reports today and I noticed the (#42MF439B is ranked last (28th) in the 40/42″ category. According to Consumer Reports, the sound quality sucks.
I bought mine at Costco. They seem to have the best deals on the big TVs, so it is worth checking out if you’re planning to get one.
I bought a Plasma, and found it is an energy hog. It basically sucks down as much energy as a second refrigerator. Try to get an LCD if you can. They are much more energy efficient and look better in a bright room.
One of the best things I did was spending time at Costco comparing the image quality among the different TVs. If the TV was alone on a shelf, I’d probably say that even the worst one looked good. But when you can do the side by side comparison, it is easy to see which TV gives you the best image for your dollar.
And finally, you live in Oregon man. We don’t pay sales tax here. What’s stopping you from getting a decent screen?
Good points about Costco. They also have an excellent return policy. A lot of stores charge a restocking fee once the box has been open.
I’ll get a flat screen eventually. My old 50″ projection screen TV still works fine. It’s not exactly a great TV, but why spend money on a new one when it still works?
