SparkFun Electronics to Give Away $100,000 of Merchandise
SparkFun Electronics is giving away $100,000 worth of merchandise tomorrow. For 14 hours, geek dads and moms can order up to $100 of products for free. The SparkFun Free Day begins at 9am MST on January 7th, 2010 and ends at 11pm (or when they reach the $100k limit).
Some geek dads and moms have heard of SparkFun, but most of you probably have not. SparkFun is the type of eStore geek dads and moms buy their electronic parts from. If you’re not sure what you should order, I would suggest an electronics kit. I have not ordered a kit from them before, but you might also need a soldering iron and solder for their kits.
I almost forgot to mention the catch, you have to pay for shipping. Here are more details about the SparkFun Free Day:
- $100 max per household
- You pay shipping
- Limit of $100,000 in giveaways for the day
- Starts 9AM MST January 7th, 2010
- Ends 11PM MST January 7th, 2010 (or when they hit $100k, whichever comes first)
- Rainchecks for popular items will be allowed
- There is no minimum or maximum order
- If you spend more than $100, the balance will be charged to your method of payment
- You will see whether or not your order qualifies for a credit in the checkout process
- Gift Cards cannot be bought on Free Day
BTW, January 7th is SparkFun Electronics’ 7th anniversary. What a way to celebrate their birthday!

I noticed the same thing. People are loading their shopping cart for tomorrow’s big free day. It’s going to be even slower tomorrow.

I was able to get to their site about 30-45 minutes ago and their banner said only around $5000 of the $100,000 has been claimed. I still have not been able to login to place an order. I think the problem is there are too many users trying to do the same thing.
BTW, they are only an hour ahead of my area. It’s only 10:30 am at Sparkfun. Still 12+ hours to go … if only people could login.
The free day is over. The promo maxed out at 1 hour and 45 minutes.
I wonder who got lucky on this deal? Reminds me of the time Burt’s Bees was giving away stuff and their site stopped loading just as it began.
At least 1000 people got in on the deal. I’m wondering how they did it. I never got pass the login screen. They probably logged in the day before and stay logged in until they could place the order this morning.
