Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel Review

I saw a free movie screening of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (opens December 23rd in the US) with the kids this morning. They should have called it the Stinkquel. Read on to find out why.

What is it about?
Duh. It’s about Alvin and his two chipmunk brothers (Simon and Theodore). This is the sequel to the first Alvin and the Chipmunks movie (released in 2007), but you don’t really need to see the first one to understand what’s going on in the second movie. This time around, the movie is about Alvin, Simon, and Theodore going to school. The squeakquel also features the Chipettes: Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor.

Will kids like the movie?
I can’t speak for your kids, but my kids liked the move. I asked my children if they liked it better than the first movie. And because my kids are demented, each one of them said yes. When I asked why, their insightful responses were: I don’t know (Little Princess, age nine), because (Little Monkey, age four), and because there’s more chipmunks (Spiderboy, age six). I’m actually surprised the kids like the sequel better than the first movie. We watched the first movie on DVD last year and the kids laughed uncontrollably throughout the movie. In the sequel, the Forever kids only laughed a few times.

Will dads and moms like the movie?
I don’t think so. I loved the first movie. I thought it was cute, entertaining, and I actually cared about the main non-chipmunk character (Dave — played by Jason Lee). In the stinkquel, I was bored and I really didn’t care about the main non-chipmunk character (Toby — played by Zachary Levi, who I like in the Chuck TV series). I was glad when the sequel finally ended. I should have brought a pillow and taken a nap.

When’s the best time to go to the restroom?
Ideally, you should go before the movie starts or afterwards. If your kids can’t wait, there’s no sense in making them wait for the right moment. There’s really nothing to miss.

Who’s in the movie?
Zachary Levi (Toby), David Cross (Ian), and Jason Lee (Dave, who was barely in this movie). The stinkquel features the voices of Justin Long (Alvin), Matthew Gray Gubler (Simon), Jesse McCartney (Theodore), Amy Poehler (Eleanor), Anna Faris (Jeanette), and Christina Applegate (Brittany).

  1. I really disliked Alvin and the Chipmunks as a kid. I have no clue why. I enjoyed them as much as Duck Tales, which means not at all. Funny how you mention that Jason Lee was barely in the movie. I keep seeing only him in the commercials.

  2. judging by the previews, I think I would have guessed the same thing. A big stinker. I’m glad you actually watched it and confirmed that suspicion so i don’t have to also suffer through it :-)

  3. The chipmunks voices irritate me. I really liked the first movie, though. The chipmunks were cute. Roo’s favorite part (of course) was when one of them was under Dave’s hat and tooted on Dave. He laughs hysterically at that part Every. Single. Time. He wants to see the Squeekquel, but I know how second movies are. Usually bad. Thanks for reviewing this one for us. Sounds like a “napper.”
