The fine folks over at Tom's of Maine contacted me about a toothpaste giveaway last month. It would have been a great Halloween giveaway (sorry for the delay, most of you know why). Like many dads and moms, I like Halloween (in my case, a lot), but I think all those Halloween treats are a bit scary. In my mind, there's a cavity inside each trick or treat candy just waiting to be hatched.
When I was growing up, we didn't have children's toothpaste. Now there are billions of children's toothpaste with all sorts of sweet flavors and sparkly gimmicks. Some of them even contain sugar (does this make sense to you?). I get my one-year-old son to brush his teeth by singing "If you're happy and you know it brush your teeth." If he spits out the toothbrush or closes his mouth, I stop singing. This prompts him to quickly open it wide again. It quickly becomes a game where he and I are both laughing :-)
My 2-year old thinks he should be able to brush all by himself (by brushing I mean sucking all the toothpaste and making yummy noises). I am very interested in this mouthwash you mentioned… can I find it at Target? The Tom's paste sounds good. I hope the baby is doing better and that you and your family are able to have a nice thanksgiving.
Yes, my wife bought the rinse at Target.
Roo loves to brush his teeth. Backwards! He turns the toothbrush where the toothpaste is facing his lips and the back of the brush is on his teeth. Then he proceeds to make a terrible mess. I think he is getting tired of the Spiderman toothpaste and is trying to find ways to make toothbrushing more interesting!

You should see the gummy toothpaste mess my kids make around the sink. They are very talented.

My kids are obsessed with the orajel no rinse stuff. It actually smells pretty good and makes their breath smell great. Who knew? There are a lot of things out there now a days. Do we date think back to a time without tooth brushes and paste?

We count all the sections, so we say we're going to do 1-2-3-4, and then the smile teeth. It seems more bearable to him if he knows when it's going to be over. I also act like I'm looking for specific food: tacos, cupcake, pizza, and throw in an octopus or rhinoceros here and there.

We use musical toothbrushes so the kids can have fun while brushing their teeth and jamming to the music.

My 2 year old daughter brushes her teeth first. Then I give her a stuffed animal or Elmo figurine to hold while I brush her teeth. I explain to the animal or figurine what I'm doing – "see Elmo, first I brush her top teeth, there's her tongue! See, next I brush her tongue…" If she's still ancy, I'll count to 10 out loud & I'm done at 10 even if I didn't do a stellar job.
