Oh Frak, Baby Has H1N1

By Daddy Forever in Fatherhood on November 2, 2009 : : 16 comments

The good news is Little Disney came home about two hours ago. The bad news is he tested positive for H1N1 (just the kind of news dads and moms want to hear). After he recovers, we have to take him back for additional tests (MRI, EEG, etc). Apparently, seizures for six hours is about five hours, fifty-nine minutes too long for an infant. At least his CAT scan turned out OK and he can move both sides of his body now.

BTW, the doctors think baby’s seizures were caused by his fever (103 degrees) and not as a direct result of the H1N1 virus. It appears our baby’s body does not tolerate heat very well. So now we have to be prepared for the possibility of more seizures whenever he has a fever (another thing for dad and mom to worry about). The doctor even prescribed anti-seizure medication. The drug is administered rectally, but at a cost of $750 for a twin kit, I feel like I’m actually the one getting reamed.

I’ll blog more about our fun later (including the really bad advice we got from our HMO). Now I have to write a post about a contest that started last night. I’m a little behind. I wonder why.

My gosh, I hope he gets better soon. Poor guy. :( It’s what parents fear and now it’s your little one. I’m so, so, so happy that it looks like he’ll be okay. Please keep us updated.

Please know I’ve been praying for little Disney. Poor guy! Has the rest of the family taken ill?

    • Our other son had a fever a few days before baby got sick. He might have given it to him. But Spiderboy is fine now and no one else is sick in our family. But we have to be extra careful and not get him sick again.

First I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this. I wanted to shed a light of hope for you. My daughter had seizures as an infant as well. I can tell you that she out grew them. She is now 9 and healthy. While it is very scary there is hope that this is temporary. Your son knows that you love him and that you are there for him. I truly believe that love helps these little ones get through it. Sending you and your family my best wishes, prayers and hopes.

I hope he gets better soon! I know how scary the seizures can be. I have a 9 month old son and he was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms at 2 months old. I hope no one else gets sick!

  12. I am sorry things are still tough for little Disney but glad he is home from the hospital. I hope he feels better soon with no ill effects of the prolonged seizures. You and your family have been in my thoughts and prayers.

  13. I have no words, no wisdom, no insights that I can share with you. I empathize with you; my son was six months old and came down with a very bad virus that had him losing weight rapidly. No one at the Children’s Hospital had any “cure” – it was a wait and see game. It’s so tough to see our babies/children ill. Stay strong, Daddy; Little Disney will get through this, and so will you all.
