Michael Jackson the Dad

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always thought of Michael Jackson as the guy who could sing, dance, and entertain. Later, I thought he was a little strange too. But even though I knew Michael Jackson had children, I never thought of him as a “dad” (who can forget the video of him dangling his baby off a balcony?). Then I saw the clip of his eleven year old daughter, Paris Katherine Jackson, during Michael’s memorial service.

“Ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine”

After seeing the last part of the memorial service, I see Michael Jackson the singer in a new light — Michael Jackson the father of three children. I’m still not convince Michael was the best father you could ever imagine, but when his little girl said it, I believed her. It sounded very sincere and from the heart. I’m sure in Paris Jackson’s eyes, Michael was the best father she could ever imagine.

In my opinion, being a dad is more important than the number of platinum records you achieved or the zillions of dollars you earned in your life. Being a parent is one of the most important and fulfilling job in the world. And if your kids think of you as the best parent you could ever imagine, then you must be doing something right. When it’s my time to go, I could die in peace and without regrets if my kids consider me the best father you could ever imagine. That wouldn’t be a bad way for my life to end.

  1. …I could die in peace and without regrets if my kids consider me the best father you could ever imagine. That wouldn’t be a bad way for my life to end.

Truer words were never spoken. I never knew how important that goal is until I became a parent myself.

  2. Amen brother, amen. When I committed to being a father, I tried my best to place them and their mother first before anything else. Still trying to do that, everyday….

  3. So sad that we so often put titles and reputations above the person as a person. No matter how you slice it some children lost a father, parent’s lost a son, siblings lost a brother, etc. Hype is just that, hype.

  4. I know this sounds hokey, but I think MJ would rejoice at this post. I think all he ever wanted was to make people happy, and that you would “get” that being a great dad would mean even more to him than records would be really validating for him.

  5. When I was little, I thought all black guys were Michael Jackson and my dad said I would yell out, “there’s Michael Jackson!” really loud. They would be so embarrassed. LOL. He was my hero when I was little. It’s sad to see him never be satisfied with his looks. It was sad to see his little girl crying. I did see lots of pictures of him with his kids. :)

  6. By the way, yes it’s true I’ve only gained 5lbs this pregnancy. I just had ultrasound though and baby is right on the mark with his weight. As long as he’s safe. I don’t know why I haven’t gained much weight. My last baby I only gained 15lbs but she came out nice and healthy. :)

  7. You know, even though he was the Father of All Freak Shows, he was still her father. And the only parent she ever knew. There is now a little girl (and her two brothers) who are fatherless for the rest of their lives. I feel sad for her in that respect.

  8. When I first saw that video, the day it happened, I watched it over and over. I gained new respect for MJ, and discovered a new successful side of him. Very sad for the children to lose their dad.

  9. I love this post. It is so very true. I do believe that MJ never grew up, his life as a child was so horrible that he spent time as an adult, trying to re-live what he would have as a child.
That raw moment on stage when his daughter spoke, was just heart breaking.
At the end of the day, those children lost the person that they loved the most….

  10. We tend to forget that famous people are also normal human beings with normal everyday lives. I love what she did for her Dad. She made them realize that amidst everything, he was still a good person.
