Happy Chinese New Year

It’s Chinese New Year. Thanks to the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year falls in January this year. I wish I could explain why Chinese New Year starts in January this year when it landed in February last year, but I can’t. I’m not a werewolf, so I have a hard time understanding a calendar that is based on cycles of the moon phase. Next year, Chinese New Year will land back in February — the day after Valentine’s Day. At least both days involve the color red.

This is the year of the Ox. The Ox is suppose to be the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. The New Year celebration lasts from the first day of the first lunar month to the fifteenth day. It’s 15 days because it takes almost 15 days to go from new moon to full moon. If we follow tradition, we’re suppose to clean the house thoroughly before the start of the new year. That’s suppose to wash away the dirt (bad luck) from the previous year and ensure our home is ready for good luck. That’s not going to happen. We’re not big on traditions involving house cleaning. But we do follow the tradition of giving good luck money in red envelopes. Sorry, you’re not getting a red envelope from us. The good luck money is for the kids.

I have had not had time to make another video, so I’m going to recycle a video from two years ago. It’s still one of my favorites:

You’re not a werewolf? Why are you just now telling us? hahahaha. When I turned on the video and my 1 year old heard the music she started dancing. Very precious. Why don’t you write a post for peeps like me – how to post videos to you tube. i’m so clueless. but, i don’t know how to operate the video camera – whatever they’re calling it now. i may be hopeless. was that suzanne vega singing?

  6. Sorry to hear about the garbage can woes – hate those. :( My mom always said to kill ‘em with kindness but that was back when people actually cared about their jobs.

I love hearing about traditions like this….me thinks I need some red envelopes at my house! LOL
