Annoying My Readers

I made several changes on my blog over the weekend. The biggest one is probably the Google Adsense ads on the side bars. Sorry about that, but the ads are not for my regular readers. Most of my traffic comes from search engines and I want to see if I can make money off of these searchers. I plan on using the money to buy giveaway prizes for my regular readers. I’ll keep you updated and let you know if it works.

The other big change is on the home page. I use to always show the entire post on the home page, but now I’m only showing a portion of the post for most entries. I prefer to show the entire post, but I have to reduce the load on the server (especially when there are a lot of graphics in the post). I know it’s annoying. Sorry.

Over the weekend, I also installed a cache plugin. Now when you view a page on my blog, you are served a version that was saved earlier. Normally, the server would query the database and serve you the most updated page. By bypassing the database, the cache plugin reduces the load on the server. Unfortunately, that means you may not always see the most recent comments.

That’s it for now. I’ll see what else I can change to annoy you.

  1. Don’t worry about running ads. It takes time to create and regularly post to a blog, and it costs money to pay for the web hosting. I run ads on my blog for the same reason, so I hope we both make a few bucks to pay back what we’ve invested in our sites!

  2. No problem on the ads. I tend to not even see that stuff, unless it’s an annoying “in my face, down my throat” thing.

Oh, and I agree – I’m thrilled about Kurt Warner. You gotta love the old guys! Matt Leinart’s time will come, but not now.

  3. You know I’m totally seeing german/italian/french language sites from here! LOL! Guess that’s what you get when you’re living Die Schweiz/Svizzera/Suisse… :p

  4. I use to be anti-ad, but now, who cares? They don’t annoy me at all anymore. You’re so fun to read, you probably have a lot of female readers, in which case, you might look at the BLogher network. Few men and some opportunities to increase your footprint. I’ll take my PR hat off now. Like, umm, I need to take my own advice. I love the comment luv, too, but can’t get it to work on the Blogger platform. Very annoying. It is a great gift to offer your regular readers.
