Elephants, Tigers, and Bears

Over the weekend, we went to see the new baby elephant (Samudra) at the Oregon Zoo. Samudra was born to Rose-Tu on August 23, 2008. Here are a few quick notes about our trip:

  1. Be glad you’re not a pregnant elephant. The gestation period for an elephant is 22 months.
  2. Samudra, a male elephant, will eventually live a solitary life. The herd consists of females only. Adult males usually live on their own.
  3. Animals are more active when they are cold. We went early to avoid the long baby elephant line and it was in the 40’s. During our visit, we actually saw animals move around for a change. Normally when we visit, the animals just lie around, watch soap operas, and eat Bon Bons all day.

Mommy, can I have some soda?

I am glad I’m not an elephant. I’ll have to tell my daughter that. She is expecting in 33 days.

I was a passenger in the car at the time my shot was taken. At 80 MPH, it safest that way. :)

You captions are funny. I finally had a chance to ride an elephant when I was in Thailand. Something I always wanted to do.

I would be too scared to ride an elephant. Way too big.

Your temps are in the 40s already? Brrrrr! I was pleased our morning temp (when I dropped off my daughter to school early) was 57. It was breezy and brisk.

The photos are excellent. Is that snow on the ground in the bear shot?

I think it’s shaved ice from an ice skating ring.

Thanks. My birthday is on the 24th and it’s still the 23rd here. But you are probably right. I was born on the 24th in Hong Kong so today would probably be my real birthday.

Cool pics. I would hate to be an elephant, too. 22 months of pregnancy is just over the top!
Happy Birthday tomorrow!

And I thought 9 months was a long time to be pregnant! Glad I’m not an elephant.
