My Very Own Jedi Knight

A strange thing happened to my son during our trip to Disneyland last summer. He became a Jedi Knight. It was completely unexpected. I thought for sure he would rekindle his interest in Buzz Lightyear at Disneyland, but instead, my son became obsessed with Star Wars.

I don’t understand his obsession. Before Disneyland, I encouraged him to watch my Star Wars DVDs, but he got bored within five minutes. After Disneyland and their Jedi Training Academy, my son watched all six of my Star Wars movies from start to finish in one sitting (just kidding — it was one a week). Now we go to Target every week so he can look at the Star Wars toys again and again and again (obviously a million and one times is not enough). I have to admit, when the Clone Wars toys first came out, I wanted to see the new Star Wars toys too. But that was in August and it’s now October. On another note, if it was up to my son, he would wear his Star Wars shirt to school every day.

One of the interesting part of being a dad is watching your kids pick up different interests as they grow up. When my son was two, he was hooked on Buzz Lightyear. When he was three, he stole my superhero action figures collection, broke all their arms (my son is obviously the villain), and became addicted to superheroes. In the past year, he has also become fond of Transformers and Bionicles. But until the Disneyland trip, he had no interest in Star Wars.

Like me, all of my kids love superheroes and Halloween. But so far, none of my kids have shown any interest in sports, which is something I love. They have no interest playing sports and no interest in watching sports. I wonder why that is. What makes them become hooked on one thing, but not on another? Sometimes, I wish I could take a peek inside my kids’ heads and see what makes them tick. You know, like that Sylar guy from Heroes. Except for the part that involves opening the skull while blood oozes out. No, that wouldn’t be good. Not good at all.

When Darth Vader is tiny and has sweet little hands like that, he needs a cuddle. :] Darth doesn’t look too scary yet. Awwww…

He’ll get interested in sports around the time you start to get un-interested in them, apparently. LOL

    cheers le

  3. My son calls Darth “Koooo Keeeee” for the breathing sound. LOL He got into the movies after playing the Star Wars Lego games. Crazy stuff.

I’d throw in a witty line like “long live and prosper” but I can’t top that cute little Darth….:)

Interestingly enough, my son was going to be DV for Halloween, but decided on IronMan instead but got a DV candy bucket…hee hee

    Hugs,

    • Funny you should mention Ironman. We finally saw it on Saturday. Afterwards, my son said he should have picked the Ironman costume because Ironman is so cool. I’m hoping I can get it on clearance next month.

Hang in there. The sports thing could just take awhile. My girls didn’t enjoy my love for baseball until they became young teenagers, so there is hope. As far as checking inside their heads, it might be better for you not to know. Could be some scary stuff…

Ya it would be great to look inside there head. You can see it in their eyes when they are thinking really hard about something. It bugs me sometimes when I know something really interesting is going on inside but I can’t figure out what special since my girl can’t talk yet.

    • When they first start talking, it can be frustrating too because the words they use may have different meaning to them. I’m actually amazed I didn’t tear out all my hair.

that minnie m pic is awesome

  7. peepnroosmom says:

Are you going to have to change his name to Vaderboy instead?

    • I’ve been calling him Little Jedi and padawan, but I don’t think I’ll change his name here. Because the minute I do, he’ll probably become obsessed with something else.

  8. My son is a Star Wars fanatic. In fact, he hums the Imperial Empire theme over and over as he’s building star ships and star destroyers with LEGO bricks. He’s a maniac. He moves to his own soundtrack.

  9. Danielle says:

Arghhhhhhhh May the force be with you…

  10. Sunrunner says:

At least he’s addicted to Star Wars so you can understand what he’s talking about. My kids are addicted to Bionicles, especially my oldest. I think my ears are going to fall off if Patrick talks to me about the Bionicles once more…

  11. Sunrunner says:

Oh yeah, and Zachary is going to be IronMan this Halloween. Patrick wants to be Luke Skywalker or Anakin… he hasn’t seen the Bionicle costumes yet.

  12. Kay says:

he looks so cute … really cute …. scary to see at night though

  13. Leslie says:

Julia is all about Chewbacca, although she refuses to actually watch the movies.

I often wonder what makes us choose the things we do, too.
