The Transformer Bike
Spiderboy got an Optimus Prime Transformer bike for his birthday from the weirdo-in-law. Spiderboy picked it out himself (the bike, not the weirdo). I was hoping he would go for the Spiderman bike because it would match his Spiderman helmet. The Optimus Prime bike is cooler, but I’m fairly certain he’s breaking several fashion laws when he rides his Transformer bike with his Spiderman helmet and pads. I wonder if he gets his fashion sense from me.
When it comes to riding bikes, my kids are behind the curve. My son didn’t figure out how to ride a toy bike until near the end of last summer. By toy bike, I mean one of those Fisher Price bikes with plastic wheels and no brakes. The Little Princess was even worst. She wasn’t ready for her Strawberry Shortcake bike until she turned six. Even then, she freaked out every time she had to go downhill. And I’m not talking about a big, steep hill. More like a gentle, one-degree slope. And she’s still using training wheels. But I’m fairly certain any day now, someone will break into our garage and steal those training wheels right off of her bike. And nothing else will be stolen. Very mysterious.
After taking Spiderboy bike riding several times, I’ve concluded a couple of things. First, my son isn’t exactly the brightest kid around. His preferred method for stopping involved crashing his bike into a curb. Most kids would just use the brakes. The other thing I’ve concluded is that Spiderboy is easily distracted. When he’s riding, he’s too busy looking to his left or right instead of where he is going. He doesn’t even notice when he starts veering to the other side of the street, to the curb, or at me. Before the month is over, I’m fairly certain he will smack into a parked car. Sorta like the time I walked right into the window display at the mall and fell on my rear.

LOL you always have me cracking up out loud…and my daughter thinks I’m nutty…”Mommy, why are you laughing all by yourself”.
I think I laughed the hardest when you said you walked in to a window display…man I would of paid to have seen that LOL
Tell Spiderboy his bike is way cool. I don’t know how to brake either..isn’t that why they made curbs : ) My 20 yr old was way behind in riding a bike. He gets his coordination from his dad
Walking into a window display is funny now, but it wasn’t at the time because of all the people looking at me. As if that doesn’t happen all the time.
I just love your posts! Just like Colleen, you always make me laugh…your family is adorable! I always enjoy your pictures you post. My five year old would flip if he seen that Optimus Prime bike! Too cool!
The bike is cool, but I can’t figure out how to transform the bike in Optimus Prime.
My kids don’t do much bike riding; they don’t have time during he school year, and they don’t ride to and from school. During the summer it’s too blazing hot to ride, so usually it’s just at the school breaks.
Little Man didn’t get off training wheels until he was about 6 or 7; I think part of it is attributable to laziness on Papa’s part, but mostly it was due to inexperience. Oh, and Little Man STILL likes to ride into the curb, so don’t worry. Luckily for us, the curbs are curve and rounded, so he just rides up and over them.
I still think Spider Boy looks cool, mismatched or not. By the time he gets to be your age, maybe not so much. *grin*
My age? I’m still 21.
Hee hee. The learning process, fashion and all others, is truly an amazing journey eh?
Hugs,
Holly
If only we didn’t buy the Spiderman helmet a few months back. Doh!
Each kid is different when it comes to riding a bike… in our house Griffin is the daredevil, Brylee STILL can’t ride her’s and she’s nearly 8! *sigh*….. your lot look so cute! Even Mommy and Little Monkey~
My son is the daring one alright. I would feel better if he would look where he is going.
My oldest has horrible road rash on one of his shins a couple summers ago because he jumped off the bike instead of using his breaks….
maybe I was exposed to industrial cleansers when I was pregnant????
LOL
Ouch! So far my son has not tried jumping off while riding. Sounds painful.
PMSL….Oh I love It….”werido in law” and here I was using the term outlaws ..
Gee you have some great one liners…
xoxox
The weirdo-in-law is also an outlaw. She’s evil and torments me every weekend.
Funny, my oldest (soon to be 8) boy is also still on training wheels. It’s all my fault too, I never get the bikes out. Sitting around and doing nothing is easier. I wonder where they get it from…
I hear ya. One of my favorite activities is lying in the kids’ bed while they play in their room.
When Julia was about two, someone in our family bought her a bike. She is just now big enough for it. (Up until now she’s been riding her trike.) We need to get her some training wheels. I tried to skip that step altogether and have taken her out with it, but I just ended up very sore and tired from running after her holding the back of her seat to keep her upright. Training wheels are good.
Your kids look so cute on their bikes! I had so much fun riding my bike when I was a kid. I had a pink Huffy I called “Puffy.” I put a lot of miles on that thing.
We had to push the kids too when they couldn’t figure out how to pedal on their toy bikes. Sometimes I think they pretend they don’t know how to pedal just to make life more difficult.
hehehe… nice ride Spiderboy! :) At least you guys have the sense to get trainning wheels! I didn’t know how to ride a bike till 7 or 8! Even then it was a BIG bike (you know the pre-war 40s type popular in SEAs?). My mum didn’t event tell me which is the brakes… :p Nice going mummy!
I didn’t matter with my son. Even though I told him where the brakes were, he didn’t use them on the first day. Freaked me out every time he went downhill.
OH, how cute!!! But you made it sound much worse than the pictures indicate LOL!!
It was much worse than the photos. I don’t have any photos of my son crashing into the curb because I was too busy freaking out at the time.
New bikes. How fun! Princess should be just fine without training wheels. She just has to get her confidence up. Spiderboy should be right behind her, especially if he has a competitive streak.
Where we were camping at the beach last week, we had to ride our bikes everywhere. The crummiest part was getting on my bike at 7:00 am and biking to the bathroom. I cam barely walk when I wake up, let alone ride a bike!
My son is the same way. Once he peed on his leg instead of into the toilet.
I’m pretty sure bike riding is a developmental thing that works sooner for kids who are very motivated to learn. I didn’t learn to ride a 2-wheeler until I was 6, but that’s because I didn’t own a bike! I think it’s harder for kids to brake because it involves coordinating the hands and feet, whereas back in the day, you just used your feet. See; so he might show that he’s even more coordinated than you were at that age, Dad! :)
OK, I’ll admit. I didn’t own a bike either and didn’t learn to ride a bike until I was in middle school. We had to go on a bike field trip so my friends taught me how to ride.
I don’t know how to ride a bike. I used to as a kid but not anymore.
I’m sure you could pick it up real quick if you had to. I wonder if they make training wheels for adult bikes.
