The Painted House

Did everyone have a good weekend? I know, last weekend is long over and the next one is about to start. But it has taken me this long to recover from the three day weekend here in the states. It’s like one of those vacation where you are so tired afterwards that you need another vacation to recover from your vacation (or from raising the kids or taking my wife to the mall). I didn’t even do anything exciting. Just saving the universe and more home improvement projects. In this case, the demolition of our outdoor storage to make way for a garden for Mommy Forever.

The highlight of the demolition was my first trip to the city dump. It wasn’t what I expected. I thought the dump was located at a landfill, but it was actually in an airplane hanger type of structure. It smelled a little, but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Considering it was the dump, it was actually relatively clean. And there wasn’t even any dead bodies. Not a single one.

My next big project is painting the house. But I have no idea how I’m going to paint our house. I painted my parents’ house several times when I was a kid. But my parents’ house is only one story and is about the size of our garage. Our house is a hundred stories high and can fit several Boeing 787 Dreamliners. My 24-foot ladder can’t even reach the gutter above our front door. It’s one of those houses that requires a ladder ON THE ROOF in order to paint the high areas over the garage. I’m also nervous about painting the trim. I’ve seen professional painters lean over the roof to paint the trim. Sounds way too dangerous to me. Lean a little too much and you’re headed head first for the concrete below. I’m not afraid of dying. I just don’t want to crack the driveway with my hard head. And then I’ll have to put in a new driveway.

Unless I can figure out a safe way to paint our house, I might have to hire someone. According to friends and neighbors, the estimates are in the range of $4,000 to $8,000. Ouch! Anyone have any suggestions for painting our house? Or better yet, does anyone want to send a few thousand dollars my way so I can hire painters?

Macho? How did you know? It’s suppose to be a secret.

rent a “cherry picker” truck?

We hired painters for well over $5,000 and our house isn’t as big. They were real winners. One wore a “Make 7up Yours” T shirt. “Make 7″ was on the front, so guess what the neighbours saw as the painters worked facing the house?

The rock music with the “interesting” lyrics. All my neighbours but a few are retired old folks. Hopefully their hearing is bad, too.

Another fellow came in three times to use the restroom. I guess he got tired of asking and I glanced out the kitchen window while doing dishes and saw…

I don’t know that I ever want to pay that kind of money again, but the alternative (death from falling) isn’t too pretty either.

I didn’t even think about that part. I wonder what do other painters do about that. Something tells me they don’t usually pee outside. Even my kids don’t that…much.

Nice house. I’ve never had to paint an exterior; sorry I don’t have any advice on that, butI’m impressed that your windows shine as if they are actually clean. Wow.

It’s from 10 months of rain. It rains a lot in Oregon.

Wow. Painting a house is alot of work. My hubby did it once and we have a really tall side of the house. He used a sprayer, but it clogged up every twenty minutes. Twenty min. of painting, 10 minutes of unclogging and swearing. He finished up with a roller and brush and those parts look better than the sprayed part years later. Also do it before it gets too hot. There’s nothing like standing on the ladder and your brain boiling inside your head.

That’s for the info. I was thinking of renting a sprayer, but it sounds like it won’t be any faster.

A helmet? Great. I’ll be safe, but will look like a dork painting the house.

I dunno, K. I think I’d shell out the money to have it done professionally. Or buy yourself a paint sprayer and hope for the best.

Or I should move and downside to a one story house. I’m sure my wife wouldn’t mind living in a smaller house. Maybe a one bedroom home. Who needs privacy?

You have a lovely house.

I’d consider having a professional do the painting. That’s a long way to fall.

If only I had super powers. Then I could fly up and paint the house.

Ah - house painting. The joys. I hear you on heights and replacing driveways. Where are the backup super heros when you need them?

Glad you survived your weekend.

Hugs,
Holly

Someday we’ll have the technology for houses that paint themselves.

I’m considering hiring someone to paint my bathroom so I’m definitely thinking don’t tackle it yourself!!!! ;)

AND why are the short weeks so long and exhausting?????

To torment us. It’s like food that taste really good. Then you paid for it in extra pounds.

I think you’re trying to pull one over on me. Something tells me your adoption will cost more than my paint job.

we sucked it up and paid….but it’s cheaper here in Colorado…and our house can only fit a cessna, not a big passenger plane…

Anyhow…have fun with that! And watch out for your back…

oh, and some real advice…use really really good quality paint, even if you have to pay off…it could buy you a couple of years before you do it again…

I agree. I rather pay a little extra now for better quality paint. Otherwise, I’ll have to do this again sooner than I like.

Hmmm… seems kinda DANGEROUS to be painting your house on YOUR OWN no? As I recall, you do have a bad back? Better hire someone to do the job. Don’t you only re-paint it in say 5 years or so?

I was thinking about my back too. With my luck, my back will go out when I’m on the roof and then I’ll be stuck. It would be real embarrassing if someone had to call 911 to get me off the roof.

I think people generally repaint 10 years or so.

That is one advantage we have here in the Philippines. Labor is cheap. We had our garden done and our house repainted and it cost us less than $100. Materials and labor.

Holy cow! That is cheap. I should either move to the Philippines or smuggle in some help from your country.

I spent Memorial Day at the King of Prussia Mall, one of the largest in the country. It was cool for about 20 minutes. We were exhausted.

King of Prussia Mall? I have not heard of that one and I’m an expert on shopping malls. Not!

I was reading about you going to pick up your daughter and finding her not to be on the bus! I would have died! Did you just die?

Yes I did, but that’s ok because I’m like a cat. I have eight more lives left.
