A Year in Review

Thank goodness 2006 is finally over with. Last year, no one in our family lost an arm, was chopped to pieces, or had their brains sucked out by aliens. Nevertheless, 2006 was not a good year for us. Here are some highlights and lowlights from last year. I’ll start with the bad so I can end this post on a good note.

The Bad

» Two days before Christmas, my wife had a sex change operation. OK, it wasn’t a sex change operation, but my wife doesn’t want me to discuss the details so I’m just going to refer to it as the sex change operation. It was an outpatient procedure and we had the option of waiting until after the holidays. Right! Five years ago they said the same thing. I ended up taking my wife to the emergency room on New Year’s Eve and she he whatever had a sex change operation that night.

» Toddler K had surgery and spent five days in the hospital.

» My birthday/Halloween party was cancelled because of Toddler K’s surgery.

» My mother was hospitalized for over a week.

» My birthday/Halloween party was cancelled.

» My wife got in a car accident while on a road trip. No one was injured. It was only a fender-bender and it was the other driver’s fault. The damage was about $800. We kept the check because what’s the point in repairing a 9-year old sedan? Do we really need a front bumper and all four tires?

» My birthday/Halloween party was cancelled.

» Our SLR camera broke. We replaced it with a small digital camera. I like going digital, but I miss all the features of my old camera.

» Did I mention Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year and we had to cancel our Halloween party?

The Good

» Thanks to the booming housing market, we were able to refinance our house. This enabled me to turn down a job offer. OK, they didn’t offer me the job, but they did invite me back for the third and final interrogation, which I declined. The job would have paid more than doubled what I made last year and include benefits like paid vacations, medical/dental, and Victoria Secret catalogs. Since I work for myself, there’s no such thing as paid vacations and I have to pay for medical and dental out of my own pocket. Money isn’t everything and right now, my kids are in the adorable stage. I want to put off rejoining the rat race for as long as I can (I use to work 70+ hours a week and will be doing so again when the kids are teenagers).

The Family (More Good)

» Toddler K: One of my favorite memories is the toddler walking on her hands and feet with her butt in the air. I also love when she wakes up. She sees me, smiles, and then comes to me. Lately, she has been breaking my heart when I have go to work and she starts crying and chases after me.

» Spiderboy Z: There was a time when the boy barely spoke. Now his mouth is stuck in the open position and he say things like, mommy is a dickhead, mommy has a big butt, and can I see your boobies? Lately, he also speaks in the third person and refers to himself as baby: baby wants daddy, baby wants milk, baby’s tired, baby’s hot.

» Princess M: Much to the dismay of my wife, the little princess is developing a goofy side like her dad. My wife can buy the little princess all the nice clothes she wants, but there’s no doubt she has my sense of humor. The little princess and I will be tormenting Mommy Forever with our evil brand of humor for many years. Have I mentioned I like holding hands with Princess M?

» Mommy Forever: I’m actually surprised we are still together. Once upon a time, our combined income was four times what it is now. The wife had to make a big adjustment (less time shopping, more time torturing me). The fact that my wife has not changed the locks on me implies one or more of the following: (a) she loves me more than shopping, (b) she’s lacing my food with kryptonite so she can collect on my life insurance, or (c) we couldn’t afford to change the locks. Is it even possible for a wife to love her husband more than shopping?

This is the start of a new year. I hope it’s going to be a good one for us and for you too. Happy New Year everyone!

Hey! You can have two birthday celebrations this year. One based on the English calendar and the second based on the Chinese calendar.

This year, have both a birthday party AND a Halloween party! :) I am sorry that you guys had it so rough this year! :( But it does sound like you’re getting a lot of good time with the kids that a lot of Dad’s don’t usually get, and that’s cool. :) I’m certain your wife loves you a bunch more than shopping, it’s the buying that’s questionable. ;)

I’ve really enjoyed reading your blog and your comments on mine. I’ll let my hubby know you’re forwarding that bill on to him. LOL

Daddy — so sorry about your Bengals, but now you can root for my Colts!

The whole shopping thing? It’s not something a man can really understand, and not all women are addicted to shopping, but I wouldn’t fret that your son isn’t the fashion plate that your daughters are. I’m sure there will come a time when he will be obsessed with his appearance, so just wait.

Enjoy the Daddy time you get; it’s over much too quickly, and before you know it, you’ll be hearing, “Ewww! Could you be any more lame, Dad?”

Happy New Year!

A good year starts with positive thoughts, Daddy Forever. Marriage and building a loving, harmonious family is a 24/7 work in process. That’s what I’ve seen from my master.

I’m sorry your party was cancelled, last year. Perhaps you can make up for it this year!

Even though stuff happened to you that wasn’t great in 2006, you certainly have a wonderful family that really loves you (even more than shopping!). I think the positive outweighs the negative there.

Here’s to a better 2007!

Happy New Year!

Wow, when you list everything like that, you guys really did have a lot to deal with in ‘06. Let’s hope ‘07 is a smoother ride!

But the good definitely outweighed the bad. I’m sure those three gorgeous children make each passing year the best one yet!

Happy New Year! May you have a great Halloween party in 2007!

Our income was also greater once upon a time… before kiddo… on two incomes… life was a financial breeze…

On the other hand, shopping is not all that much fun. At least that’s what I tell myself now.

Ha!! My little guy refers to himself as “baby” like that too, how odd. Yes, before children, we actually had money - ah well. Shopping is overrated, right?? ;) So sorry about your Halloween party ;).
