Puff the Magic Daddy

Most parents sing kids songs to their kids. I like to sing grown-up songs when I tuck my kids in or put them down for a nap. One of the songs my kids like to hear is Puff the Magic Dragon, by Peter, Paul & Mary (aff). It’s a grown-up song because kids don?t normally sing a song like this. Even with my horrible voice and lack of tones, I can put my kids to sleep by singing Puff. The song actually makes me a little sad. Near the end of the song is the phrase, “a dragon lives forever but not so little boys.” In many ways, we are Puff the Magic Dragon. We are daddies and mommies forever, but our kids will eventually grow up and leave the nest.

Below are the lyrics in case you want to sing the song to your kids. Sometimes, I like to substitute “daddy” for “dragon” and my kid?s name for “Jackie Paper.” The song actually works well for mommy, grandpa, grandma, and other relatives too.

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Little jackie paper loved that rascal puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on puffs gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow wheneer they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no more
And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee.

  1. I just Googled on a phrase very similar to what you have written after listedning to Puff the song on my MP3 player at work and tearing up as I thought about how my kids and my relationship will change as they get older. I too felt like Puff.
