A Letter to My Little Princess

Dear Princess M,

ballet

Once upon a time, you were a baby and a toddler. We spent an entire summer together when you were two. Daddy was unemployed and mommy worked. Everyday we went for walks, played at the park, or hung out at Victoria Secret the zoo. You were very clingy to daddy back then. I thought I was at the center of your universe, but I was just a shooting star. I burned bright in your life until you were three, and then “poof!” — you no longer consider me the center of your universe. You cling to mommy now and revolve around your little friends.

I have to admit, when daddy took care of you full time, there were many days when daddy wondered how he was going to make it through the day. At times, an hour seemed like an eternity. Daddy couldn’t wait until mommy got home. It wasn’t you, it was me. You are our first child. Parenting was very new to us and was not something we did well — especially me. My parenting gene didn’t kick in until much later and you have taught me a lot about being a dad.

You were not an easy kid to take care of. When you got upset, you would cry and cry until you threw up. When we went on road trips, you got carsick and threw up. When we fed you food you did not like, you would cry and then throw up. Throwing up was something you did really well.

You also had an altimeter built inside you. Daddy would hold you and rock you to sleep. When daddy lowered you to the crib you would wake up. Daddy even tried holding you while you slept. As soon as daddy sat down, you would start crying. Daddy gets back up and you fall back asleep. Down, more crying. Up, back to sleep. You wouldn’t let daddy sit down while you slept. As you can imagine, holding you while you slept was not an easy thing to do. Thanks to you, daddy needs a new back.

Because you spent so much time with daddy, I thought for sure you would grow up to be a tomboy. But you are definitely a girl. You like to wear pretty clothes and prefer dresses over pants. You have already decided which colors, toys, and cartoons are for girls and which are for boys. And when your little brother picks a “girl” color, toy, or cartoon, you laugh and say, “that’s for girls!” You don’t have any interest in sports. You just want to be a cheerleader when you grow up.

You are six now and I miss the days when you were just a baby and a toddler. You are growing up way too fast. It’s hard to believe you will be entering first grade next month. And before too long, you will be going away to college, getting marry, and starting your own little family. As your father, I am ordering you to stop. Don’t grow up. Stay the way you are now. I want you to be my little princess forever.

Love,
Daddy Forever
