A Letter to Baby K

Dear Baby K,

First thing I want to say to you is, “I’m sorry.” I’m sorry because you and I have not bonded. Yes, I do love you. It’s just that your older brother, Spiderboy Z, hoards every free minute of daddy’s time. I know it’s not fair. Your older sister, Princess M, had daddy all to herself for the first three years of her life. Then Spiderboy came along and clung to daddy from the moment he turned one. He’s three now and clings to daddy even more now than before — leaving you fatherless.

Baby K walking on all fourThough I may be a stranger to you, you are no stranger to me. You came quietly into this world. Your older brother and sister cried when they were born and cried when the nurse gave them their first bath. Not you. You came into world without making a fuss, as if to say, what’s the big deal? You were the smallest of our babies, but you gained the most weight at the hospital.

You have been walking on all four for a few months now. That’s right, on all four. You don’t crawl, you walk around on your hands and feet, your knees don’t touch the ground, and your butt sticks up in the air. Its one of the funniest things I have ever seen. When people come over, we all laugh at your expense. But you just look at us and smile.

Your favorite song is Roses are Red. It goes something like this:

Roses are red my love,
Violets are blue.
Sugar is sweet my love,
But not as sweet as you.

Baby KYou love this song and sing along in your cute baby language.

You’re ten and half months now. You hate being placed in the car seat, getting tucked in, and seeing mommy leave. You love going for walks in the stroller, sitting in the swing, and eating cereal. You also love exploring the house, playing with toys, and pulling out peat moss from our planters. Your sister adores you and your brother likes to wrestle with you. Sometimes, Spiderboy even yanks on your head. So far your head has only fallen off once, but thanks to the magic of super glue, you are as good as new.

You love books, but not for reading. You prefer to eat them, along with anything else you can stick in your mouth. You like to stare at me when I eat, wondering why you get mashed carrots for dinner while I get candy, cookies, chips, and ice cream. Don’t worry, when you get older daddy will give you the good stuff when mommy isn’t looking. I already have my line memorized, “Oh, how did she get that?”

Like your sister and brother before you, you hate sleeping in the crib. Instead, you sleep with mommy and daddy (until Spiderboy comes in and drags daddy back to his room). So far, you have not fallen off the bed. But you are an accident waiting to happen.

Baby KDaddy loves playing peek-a-boo with you. When daddy pops out and say peek-a-boo, you flash your great smile. Your smile makes daddy smile. And when daddy tickles you, you giggle in delight. You love riding on daddy’s shoulders. Way up there, in the air.

Not sure how you picked this up, but you also like to smack people with your hands. It’s funny when you smack people in the arms, not so funny when it’s the face. Sometimes when you play, you like to give daddy things. Other times, you pull your hand away when daddy reaches for your hand. Then you smile like you know what you are doing.

In time, we will bond and I will not be a stranger to you. In time, you will know I love you.

Love,
Daddy Forever
